Does anyone else admire discworld more than they enjoy it?
Hey!
In the last year or so I've been really getting into reading fantasy. On that topic, I've read 5 discworld books (by Terry Pratchett) and I've now DNFed 2.
I read the colour of magic, the light fantastic, equal rites, Mort, sourcery. Then DNFed wyrd sisters. More recently I picked up guards guards as its a common recommendation and I wanted to jump into the 'best' of what it has to offer, but I've ended up putting it down.
Please no one get me wrong, I'm not at all trying to dunk on Pratchett and I know the discworld is loved whole-heartedly by a lot of people.
When I'm reading they are funny, have beautifully constructed turns of phrase and brilliantly satirise tropes of fantasy and storytelling more widely. My honest experience however is that they don't really hold my interest. The characters are often (not always) caricatures and the plots of the books are entirely inconsequential. It's beautifully whimsical but I guess I've realised lately I need at least slightly higher stakes in a story to remain invested.
I enjoy reading a scene or two at a time, but to continue through an entire book feels a bit like a slog, which is odd considering that they're all generally quite short. I can enjoy it in snippets but sadly I just don't think I'm invested in reading a whole book again.
Has anyone else had a similar experience? I'm really curious as these books are seemingly universally loved. I'm willing to accept the issue is me!
