Needing SSN to transfer registration?
Two years ago, my sister bought my old car from me. Earlier today, my parents called me stating that she was at the DMV getting the car registered under her name and she needed to give my SSN to the DMV to get that approved. Apparently she had a temporary license plate in the back window and needed to get the proper license plate and stickers? I tried to ask questions but they were unsure of the situation, and before I could really say anything more they had found old documents that had my SSN on it and gave it to her.
Beyond obviously being upset at my parents for just giving her my SSN, I am concerned at how legit this is? I've bought cars from people before in the past, and I've NEVER needed their SSN to get it registered under my name. I'm worried that she's re-registering it under MY name, which is why she needed to use my SSN instead of her own. I am going to be calling the DMV tomorrow and sort this out, but I did want to ask here first. Thank you for any help and insight!
