Update #25

State of the Project Update

This update provides an overview of the current state of the M1 project. It also clarifies how the Indiegogo campaign fits into the overall project and addresses several common misconceptions we have seen from the community.

Hello everyone,

Before we begin, we want to apologize for the lack of updates here on Indiegogo.

We understand that many of you have been waiting not only for your rewards, but also for clearer communication regarding the project's progress. While work on the M1 has continued throughout this period, we should have done a better job of keeping our Indiegogo backers informed.

It has been some time since our last comprehensive update, and we wanted to take the opportunity to provide a broader overview of where the M1 project stands today, what progress has been made, and what you can expect moving forward.

The Project Remains Active

The M1 project remains very much active.

Although the project has experienced significant delays and a number of unforeseen challenges, work has continued throughout. Firmware development remains active, support operations continue, documentation is expanding, certification efforts are ongoing, and fulfillment continues to move forward.

We understand that long periods between major milestones can create uncertainty, particularly for those who are still waiting for their rewards. We hope this update provides a clearer picture of where the project stands today.

Progress Since Launch

One of the most common concerns we continue to see is whether the project is still progressing.

The answer is yes.

Since launch, thousands of M1 devices have been delivered to backers, firmware updates have continued to be released, the public GitHub repository remains active, and both official and community developers continue improving the platform.

The M1 today is substantially more capable than it was when development first began, and we remain committed to continuing that development well into the future.

Understanding the Indiegogo Campaign

We have also seen some confusion regarding the Indiegogo campaign itself.

The Indiegogo campaign was launched as an extension of the original crowdfunding campaign and consisted of 356 backers with approximately $45,842 in funding.

Because it followed the original campaign, fulfillment has also followed that sequence. The original campaign funded much of the development, tooling, certification, manufacturing preparation, and initial production effort, so fulfilling those earlier obligations has remained our priority before transitioning into broader Indiegogo fulfillment.

We wanted to clarify this because we have seen some discussions incorrectly assuming that the Indiegogo campaign represented a much larger standalone project. In reality, it was an extension campaign that forms part of the overall M1 project.

We are attaching the statistics from our Indiegogo project dashboard below.

Current Indiegogo Status

Assuming there are no unforeseen logistical issues, we hope to begin shipping the first Indiegogo rewards within the next couple of weeks.

As with any hardware project, unexpected issues can still arise, so we prefer to provide realistic estimates rather than firm promises. We will continue posting updates as fulfillment progresses and will let everyone know as soon as the first Indiegogo rewards begin shipping.

For our European Union and United Kingdom backers, CE and RED certification remain the primary factors affecting fulfillment. We continue working through these requirements and will provide further updates as progress is made.

Development Continues

Firmware updates continue to be released as new features, improvements, and bug fixes are completed. The public GitHub repository remains available, and it has been great to see members of the community creating their own firmware enhancements and contributing new ideas to the platform.

Our goal has always been for the M1 to be an open and continuously evolving device, and that commitment remains unchanged.

Addressing Some Common Misconceptions

Over the past several months we have seen a number of miunderstandings.

The project has not been abandoned. Development, fulfillment, support, and certification work all remain active.

Rewards are being delivered (Original Campaign). Thousands of M1 devices have already reached backers, and fulfillment continues to progress.

While delays have understandably caused frustration, they should not be mistaken for inactivity. Hardware projects can encounter significant manufacturing, certification, and logistics challenges, and unfortunately we experienced several of them throughout this project. Even so, work has continued every step of the way.

Communication

One area where we know we can improve is communication.

Many backers have asked for more frequent updates, even when there are no major announcements to make. We understand that request. Going forward, we intend to provide more regular updates regarding fulfillment progress, certification efforts, and development activity so that everyone has a better understanding of where the project stands.

We know this project has required a great deal of patience from our backers, and we genuinely appreciate those who have continued supporting us throughout this journey.

We look forward to sharing more progress with you soon as Indiegogo fulfillment begins.

Fulfillment Progress Update

Hello everyone,

We wanted to provide a brief update on fulfillment progress and where things currently stand.

Since our last update, fulfillment has continued moving forward and we are now approaching 4,000 rewards shipped. While we know many backers are still waiting, we are continuing to process inventory and move through the fulfillment queue as quickly as possible.

Current Fulfillment Status

For regions that are currently eligible for shipment, we are actively working through backer ranges approximately 1–8,000, excluding regions that remain affected by certification requirements or regional restrictions.

As always, fulfillment is not based solely on backer number. Regional requirements, inventory allocation, warehouse processing, shipping restrictions, and order completion status all affect when a particular reward is shipped.

EU and UK Certification

We know many of our EU and UK backers are eager for an update.

Unfortunately, certification remains the primary blocker preventing us from shipping rewards into those regions. We continue working through the process, but progress has been slower than anticipated.

At this point, we are actively evaluating additional compliance resources and alternative certification experts to help move the process forward. While we are not ready to announce any changes yet, we want backers to know that we are exploring every available option to accelerate certification and begin fulfillment in those regions as soon as possible.

Why Fulfillment Has Taken Longer Than Expected

A number of factors have contributed to delays over the course of the project.

Manufacturing has occurred in batches rather than all at once, meaning fulfillment advances as inventory becomes available. In addition, the M1 contains rechargeable batteries, radio hardware, and region-specific compliance requirements that add complexity to both manufacturing and international shipping.

We have also continued making firmware improvements throughout fulfillment. While this has occasionally required additional testing and validation, our goal has always been to ensure backers receive the best product possible rather than rushing units out the door without addressing issues we discover.

Looking Ahead

Fulfillment remains active and will continue moving forward as additional inventory is processed and allocated.

We understand many of you have been waiting far longer than originally expected, and we recognize the frustration that comes with that. Please know that our team continues working daily with manufacturers, warehouses, logistics partners, and compliance experts to move rewards through the pipeline as quickly as possible.

Our goal remains the same as it has always been: deliver rewards to every backer and continue improving the M1 platform long after fulfillment is complete.

We appreciate your patience and continued support.

Update 33

Update #33

We want to share an update on the M1 firmware, public GitHub release, power management testing, and fulfillment progress.

GitHub Migration and Firmware Releases We are moving our primary communication and technical updates to a more transparent system. We are currently finalizing a dedicated web app for project updates, but in the meantime, we have completed the migration of all documentation, source code, and firmware tracking to our public GitHub repository. This move allows you to see real-time progress on the codebase and access the most recent technical guides as they are updated.

The latest public release currently available on our GitHub is firmware v0.8.0.2. This release includes work on Universal Remote, bug fixes, and updates connected to the infrared database. This is an important step for the M1 because it moves more of the firmware work into a public place where users, developers, and the community can follow progress directly.

The central hub for the project is now live. The repository includes source code, build information, project documentation, hardware details, license information, and contribution guidelines: https://github.com/Monstatek/M1

For the latest firmware builds and version notes, visit the releases page directly at: https://github.com/Monstatek/M1/releases

We will follow up with specific instructions for using these resources while we finish the web application for updates. The public repository includes firmware work across the main M1 feature areas, including NFC, LF RFID, Sub-GHz, Infrared, Bluetooth through the ESP32 co-processor, WiFi through the ESP32 co-processor, battery monitoring, display support, and USB support for CDC and MSC. We know many backers have been waiting to see more open development around the M1. This release is not final , but it is a real step toward making the project more transparent, easier to build on, and easier for developers to contribute to. GitHub will remain the main place for public source code and firmware releases, while broader fulfillment updates will continue to be shared here.

Power Management Testing We also want to explain one of the reasons fulfillment and firmware work took longer than expected. During testing, we identified some software-side power management issues. At first, we were concerned because power-related issues can be difficult to diagnose correctly, and we did not want to continue pushing units out until we had a clearer understanding of the root cause.

Power issues are especially difficult to identify because the same symptom can come from several different places. A device turning off unexpectedly, waking incorrectly, draining battery too quickly, reporting the wrong battery level, or not entering a low power state can look like a battery issue, a charging issue, a firmware issue, a component issue, or a board-level issue.

Because of that, testing can be very hit or miss at first. A device may behave normally during one test, then show the issue only after charging, sitting idle, powering off, waking back up, or running through a specific sequence. These issues often do not appear immediately, so they require repeated testing over time instead of one simple pass or fail check.

Fortunately, after investigation and additional testing, this was identified as a software-side issue rather than a hardware issue. Even though the root cause was not hardware-related, it still created a delay because we had to test carefully and make sure the fix was stable. Power behavior affects charging, shutdown, standby, battery reporting, wake behavior, and long-term reliability, so we felt it was important to take the extra time to test this properly before continuing at full speed.

Shipping and Fulfillment Update Shipping is still actively ongoing, and rewards are continuing to move through the fulfillment queue. We recently received an additional 1,000 devices. This is progress and it allows us to continue fulfillment, but it is less inventory than we expected to have at this stage. Because of that, this batch will help move the queue forward, but it will not clear all remaining orders at once.

These units still need to go through the normal fulfillment process before tracking is issued. That includes receiving, checking, matching units to orders, packing, labeling, and handoff to the carrier. Tracking is usually not generated until an order is packed or scanned, so some backers may not see tracking immediately even though their order is still in the queue.

Shipping the M1 is also more complicated than a simple domestic package. The device includes a rechargeable battery, radio hardware, and region-specific compliance requirements, so each shipment has to move through the correct battery handling, customs, certification, warehouse, and carrier steps.

For regions that require additional certification, we cannot ship devices until the required clearance is complete. This mainly affects regions such as the EU, UK, and Australia. Once we are cleared to ship in those regions, we will continue fulfillment based on the queue and available inventory.

For regions that are already moving through fulfillment, the newly received devices will be allocated and shipped in sequence as they are processed. We are also continuing to coordinate additional inventory so fulfillment can continue beyond this batch. We will provide solid dates as we receive further confirmation.

If you have an order-specific question, please email support@monstatek.com from the email address associated with your Kickstarter account and include your backer number and country. This helps us verify the order and check the correct fulfillment region.

Thank you again for your patience and continued support as we continue shipping rewards and improving the M1 firmware.

"I know a lot of you have noticed the silence and lack of updates lately, so I wanted to give a quick update on what’s going on.

Right now, the Monstatek team is in South Korea working directly with the factory to help streamline the issues that are currently going on. Because of that, we still don’t have any solid timeline yet for additional shipping or certifications.

As soon as we have more concrete information, we’ll make sure to update everyone right away.

Also, expect email responses to be a little slower than normal for now. Derrick is currently filling multiple roles while being on-site at the factory, so things are pretty busy behind the scenes."

Current Update

** NEW UPDATE**

We want to give everyone a transparent update on where things currently stand. While we’ve hit several roadblocks throughout this process, progress is being made across multiple regions, even if things are moving slower than we originally hoped.

🇺🇸 USA & 🇨🇦 Canada

Shipping has temporarily slowed down while we investigated and addressed the recently discovered power issue. The goal was to avoid sending out any DOA units, and while this decision caused delays, it was made to ensure backers receive working products rather than rushing shipments out the door.

At this time, we currently have around 1,000 units ready to begin shipping, with the remaining US inventory still in transit.

🇪🇺 Europe

Unfortunately, EU fulfillment is currently the biggest unknown. We hired Element Labs to handle this portion, but at this stage we cannot provide a reliable timeline. There is still a possibility that Element Labs may not complete the work, which could require us to bring in another firm to finish the process.

We know that’s frustrating to hear, but we would rather be honest than provide unrealistic estimates that may change later.

🌎 South America

We currently have test shipments going out to several countries. Results have been mixed so far:

- Brazil and Mexico shipments have moved successfully

- Some shipments, including Chile, have encountered customs holds

We are continuing to monitor and adjust based on those results.

🌏 Asia

Asia fulfillment has run into freight forwarding issues. Unlike other regions, we cannot use EasyShip here and instead must rely on a Chinese freight forwarder. We are currently experiencing major issues with that partner and are actively working on finding a solution forward.

Additional Notes

We also want to clarify that some backers waited until April to pay their shipping fees. Even if those backers had lower original backer numbers (3000 or below), they have been moved toward the back of the fulfillment queue due to the delayed payment completion.

We understand the delays have been frustrating, and we sincerely apologize for how long this process has taken. Even with the setbacks, work is continuing every day to get fulfillment moving properly across all regions. We’ll continue providing updates as we have more concrete information to share.
