Mourning doves swallow safflower seeds whole. The seeds are stored in their crop first, then digestive acids soften the shells before their gizzard grinds them down using swallowed grit like tiny stones or sand. Their gizzard basically crushes the tough shells so they can absorb all the nutrients. 🩶
When you see them pecking at gravel or sandy areas this is why they’re doing that 🙂👍🪶

I live in an RV park. No in ground gardening allowed. A couple of my neighbors laid sod last year & it looks..not so great. Those w/ try laying grass seed see no success. I need advice bc I’m losing my sand & the yard looks blehh.
I have so many critters in my yard & don’t want to change up too much for them. A lot of the birds, lizards & butterflies actually use the sand. However we’ve lost so much of it in the past year & half at this site.
I do also clean up under the bird feeders everyday & some sand accidentally gets tossed in the waste bin, but not enough to be at the rate we’re losing sand.
I can also see some of the roots of the trees.
What recommendations/advice do you have to help spruce up my yard a bit? But also keep it habitat friendly for the animals. I get tons of birds & squirrels. Was told to try mulch clippings but it’s hot & humid here & we get hammered w/ rain. I’m afraid of it getting moldy. And I’m not a fan of full stone lots. TIA
Edit/add: we are required to maintain our yards. Such as weeding, & regularly removing leaves.
