Always makes me smile to see one of these beauties at the feeder
Its been hot at my house. LOTS of activity in the bath. 🥰
I had this little fella move into my backyard about a week ago and she seems she’s here to stay and she’s got some babies on the way. I’ve been looking online for what kind of seeds to feed it or what brand of seed feed to buy but I’m having a bit of trouble because I’ve seen lots of different answers. Is there a brand I can buy online that has all the right seeds that they can eat that anyone could recommend or maybe a good place to buy the seeds to make my own mix. I don’t want to just buy the first bag I see pop up on Amazon or google. I want to make sure it’s got the good stuff they can actually eat safely. I’m not too worried about the cost so any recommendations are welcomed!
Finally got a hummingbird at my new feeder today! ❤️
I live in the US and usually shop at atwoods for my bird seed. I get a 40 pound bag and run through it like a week and a half. Is there anywhere where I can get bulk bird seed or more than a 40 pound bag. Or if you suggest anywhere that has 40 pound bags for a better price. Any advice appreciated, thanks.
Edit for more context I buy the premium 40lb bag from atwoods. The birds love the sunflower seeds but many people have told me in the comments its the milo they dont like which makes sense since the morning doves always yeets the food. So should I just buy sunflower seeds, I have birds like Cardinals, sparrows, finches and of course the seeb inspectors, white winged doves. Is the feed better at atwood or tractor supply Co those are really my two options closest to me.
I have a small cup feeder that I fill with live mealworms. I’m in Brooklyn, but get a decent amount of birds coming through. Mostly mourning doves, house sparrows and finches and cardinals. I have seen downies and flickers, chickadees and goldfinch come through. I have a mostly native (and vegetable) garden with some trees towards the back.
Unfortunately I have a couple of resident strays that live in and around my garden. I had them neutered, and I do care for them. They don’t normally sit right by the feeders. I’m afraid this will be rage bait and I really don’t want to focus on them.
My question is, how can I make the mealworms more enticing for birds besides just the house sparrows? Is there a better style feeder? Is it that in the current location the plants grow up too close to it and they don’t feel safe? I have a decent sized garden, so have other options for locations. I raise mealworms for the birds, but feel like only the sparrows are benefiting.
Thanks!
I use an Ozeri Garden and Kitchen Scale II. In order to read the LCD output I use a mirror, then I have to flip the image to read it.
If you lost everything you have for this hobby, all your feeders, foods, baths, containers and accessories, all of it, and you wanted to start over with everything you need to feed all the types of birds you want to feed, what would your shopping list be?
No easing into it. No starting slow and simple. You've already been doing this for a while, you've figured out what works and what doesn't. One shopping trip to get everything you want.
I think a Cooper's hawk? Never seen a raptor on my balcony before 😁
So i just back into gardening and doing bird stuff. Getting a decent amount of traffic but nothing crazy. Any recommendations? Thx
She is ok and flew away as soon as I got her out. Are these feeders notorious for being dangerous? I’ve never had this happen.
Edit: this is a block of suet in the photo, it’s just almost entirely eaten by this point.
Hi all, it’s me again! A week ago I had setup a few more feeders to my existing system of Black Sunflower Seeds, whole peanuts and mixed berry suet - Original Post Here.
Prior to adding new feeders, I had some chickadees and red-winged black birds come throughout the day. But, after adding the new feeders and reducing the height of the feeder (I live on 14th level), I have received no visitors! It sucks because I’m on the top floor and I see alot of birds fly 5-10 feet away from my window every 5minutes!
I have added some flowers and I’m currently working on an electric plug-in bird bath fountain as I don’t recieve consistent sun in my balcony.
My guess is since it’s summer, birds have enough food supply and will probably need a bird bath to cool down.
Do you guys have any recommendations for a tall plug-in bird bath? I was thinking of a railing-mounted one but I need something that is very reliable to avoid risking it fall.
P.S. - I live in London, ON, Canada.
It has the bubbler fountain on low and some rocks in the bottom, one of which sticks up above the water. I’ve seen 2 robins perch on the rim, then take off. It’s shaded by a tree and near another bush and a feeder (in the background) any suggestions for more birds to feel welcome?
I was feeding birds in my backyard with around 4-5 feeders for around a year up until a few months ago when I just stopped refilling them and just took them down and left my hummingbird feeders up. Those I regularly fill and swap every couple of days with homemade nectar and it feels more fulfilling for some reason. I kinda felt bad that I basically closed down a buffet for these wild birds but something in me was slightly over the pigeons basically taking over and pushing smaller birds away. They still got to feed but having 30-40 pigeons at once in my backyard was a sight to behold and combine that with them eating the dry food we put out for stray cats it got annoying to a point. Anyone else just randomly stop filling their feeders and take them down? I’d love to still continue to feed them sometime in the future but for now it’s not in me.
