Idea worked!
I had to take down all my feeders due to a sick house finch (mycoplasma eye disease) and at only day 4 have really missing all the birds. Luckily, goldfinches have been visiting the garden. Today, I had to cut back some spent coneflowers but with the goldfinches around, I stuck a handful of stems into my empty suet cage hanging by a hedge. Within 15 minutes had this pair hanging out! (I left many other coneflowers.)
Pretty Lady
She was first at our feeder this morning. Still had bed hair 🤪
Why do babies drs prefer this feeder?
I have 2 feeders hanging close to each other . Both of these were filled at the same time with the same seed. So why do the birds seem to much prefer the while plastic feeder over the metal one?
So much rain!!!
We’ve been getting so much rain in my area, my seed started to sprout and grow in the feeder. I just recently refilled this one.
Is this a good spot for my bird feeder? Help!
I’ve had the bird feeder up for over two weeks now. I put some seed along the deck a few days ago and had a few small birds eat from there. But none have gone to the feeder at all or since. Is it not in a good spot? Should I move it and place it on the brick of the house there? Or move it completely to the front of the yard on the giant tree we have.
Hello There
Set this up originally to try to get the pileated to come. Had just refilled the square cages for the 2nd time this week, after what I can only assume a larger woodpecker is tearing through them. Stepped inside to throw some things away and before I could even go back out to put up the ladder. Had a visitor.
Not sure exactly the type, but one of the bigger ones that has come so far
Is this Avian Pox
Hey everyone,
I noticed this finch visiting my yard in the Greater Montreal area and caught a clear picture of a round, fleshy nodule growing right on its left foot digit.
From what I've researched, it looks highly consistent with the dry/cutaneous form of Avian Pox, but I wanted to get a second opinion from the community here.
If this is likely avian pox, I plan to take down my feeders and birdbaths for a few weeks to let the local population disperse and prevent it from spreading.
Would love to hear if anyone agrees with this ID.
Nuthatch and chickadee feeder.
I have other feeders that have sunflower chips but the nuthatches and chickadees prefer shell-on seeds from these simple wire cages. The double-baffle in the last picture keeps the squirrels away.
Experience with Avian Pox?
Hey everyone!
So I have this birdfeeder for 3 months now and today was the first time I noticed a sick house finch or at least something unusual on it (see photos) - of course this had to happen on the day we got our first blue jay ever...the finch was behaving totally normal jumping around and eating well, it just had this massive wart on its beak.
I was curious so I asked/used AI as well as the good old google search and quickly found out that this bird probably has dry avian pox.
I didn't hesitate and as soon as I came home from work, I took the feeder down, emptied it out, cleaned it thoroughly and put it away for now.
I guess I have multiple questions: What do you think based on the attached images? Have any of you had experiences with avian pox? Were you successful by keeping the feeder away for 2 weeks or did sick birds return right after putting it back up? Also, based on the pictures, do you think this bird is already at the end of the "healing up stage"?
Any comment or feedback is appreciated!
Lastly, I have an instagram and tiktok account named @jasbackyardfriends. I love connecting with other birdfeeding accounts and seeing all your lovely visitors!🐦 You're welcome to follow me, I'm happy to follow you back!
New Lifer!

Magpies make ordinary days feel a little less ordinary.
There have been several magpies here since this summer. I'm happy about that, but I guess I'll have to teach them some table manners.
Finally, a few raindrops. I think the blackbird is happy, too.
Bird feeding advice to avoid rats
Hello fellow bird enthusiasts,
Having a few issues with a neighbor feeding the birds which is causing an ongoing rat problem which is starting to get quite expensive!
As she is unwilling to stop feeding them I am looking for advice as to other alternatives that I could advise her to use that would be less attractive to the rats.
TIA
Ideas for Stopping Raccoons
I’m at my wits end. A raccoon(s?) has discovered my feeders and raids it every night. I’ve tried a baffle, shields, greasing the pole, hot cayenne pepper, traps and spikes. Check out the current setup. Normally there are two feeders. The bastards dragged one into the woods. They’ve also dragged away one camera, two landscaping lights and three sonic deterrents. None of trees are close enough to jump. I’m trying to avoid violence because my grandkids think it’s funny.
Cantaloupe is a Hit
Big year for females and fledglings. More than I’ve seen here before.
Question about Carolina Wrens
Why is there a wren that keeps coming by my feeder? Looks like he’s rummaging. I know they don’t prefer feeders typically so was wondering if he was foraging for bugs or something!
Please disregard the mess — it had just rained, a little piece fell off, and the feeder was low.
