Struck by Lightning?
If in fact this charred crevice is evidence of a lightning strike it’s amazing this tree is still thriving!

The size of the crevice is amazing and it reveals a charred surface inside with huge scratches

The size of the huge crevice makes it simply be amazing that this tree is still thriving. The inside appears to be charred and the huge scratch marks could be made by a bear??
