My cat (3 m) threw up his first real hair ball today and hasn’t stoped throwing up.

Is it normal for cats to be sick for a while after huge hair balls? He hasn’t ever had a hair ball before so I’m unsure of what’s ‘normal’ here and when I called the emergency vet they wouldn’t give me specific advice. Just to “come in if you feel like it’s bad” (and yes I understand they don’t want to be held liable for advice given over the phone)

The hair ball in question was over 12 hours ago now and then he had his breakfast and seemed fine. About five hours later he vomited up more hair, this time less of a ‘ball’ but lots of hair and food in the vomit.
And now he has been throwing up small bits of white foam for a few hours. Google is saying this could be because his stomach is empty.

He wouldn’t eat his dinner or drink anything. He is hiding or laying with me only.

Relevant info: he does have feline herpes virus and did just get over a flare up.

Also I believe the cause of the hair ball was due to an unfortunate poop situation where he got poop stuck to his butt so he needed a bath. (The poop did seem a bit on the constipation side)Normally after a bath I brush him out but this time I didn’t and I think he over groomed himself.

Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.
