Here is my theory on everything that went down and why it did.
The motivation: No more cake
With the death of Thjazi, the sundered houses essentially carved up Dol Makjar between each other. Every single one getting a sizeable slice (the education, the guards, the museum etc.) and in a way ensuring that no house goes after another, because it would risk the stability of everything they made.
They have to look beyond for more cake and more slices. Like Timony, which both Tachonis and Halovars have been looking to destabilize and sink their teeth into.
Yanessa was explicit in one of the early episodes that while they are close allies, they have a knife at their back. There is an inherent conflict between them because of what each house stands for.
The two families stood to gain the most if Gus died, poised to take charge and divide up the kingdom between each other. It is 90% certain they were working together on this....which makes it interesting that the Halovars hijacked the scheme.
The tachonis were the psychopomps once upon a time, now not so much. Now we have a big resurrection announcing to the world. THE HALOVARS CAN GO WHERE THE TACHONIS ONCE DID AND RETURN!
It is a slap to their face and a way to infringe on their power and authority without drawing blood or making an explicit move. Had Gus died, it would have been the perfect 2-1 punch to seize ALL of Timony for themselves with pure religious fervor.
