Hey community — my wife and I are seriously exploring a move to Carlsbad/Encinitas from the Calabasas area and would love some honest intel from people actually living there. We are tired of the crime and homelessness here…yes, even in Calabasas.

Quick background: I run my own business and work primarily from home. My wife runs a health and wellness content business. We have a 2 year old. We’d be renting first — budget up to $12K/month for a house — and would love neighborhood recommendations from people who actually know the area.

A few specific questions:

Neighborhoods: With a young child, what areas would you recommend for families? We’re looking for a great school zone, safe streets, and a strong community feel. What neighborhoods are worth targeting at our budget and which ones should we avoid?

Pacific Surfliner / Amtrak commute: This is my biggest practical question. I’d need to get to the Beverly Hills/Century City/West Hollywood corridor once or twice a week max. I’m seriously considering boarding the Surfliner in Solana Beach, working on the train, handling a full day of meetings, and catching the train back for dinner. For anyone who does this or has tried it — is the train reliable enough to actually build a work schedule around? How consistent are the departure and arrival times? Any tips for making a LA day trip work smoothly?

Schools: Carlsbad Unified looks strong from our research but we’d love to hear from parents on the ground. Which elementary schools do people love and why? What’s the parent community like?

Food scene: My wife’s content business is heavily focused on whole foods and wellness so this matters a lot to us. What are the best farmers markets in and around Carlsbad — and how do they compare to what you’d find in LA? And restaurant recommendations are always welcome — date nights, casual family spots, hidden gems.

Overall: What do you love about living there that you couldn’t have anticipated before the move? And what do you wish you’d known going in?

We’ve done a lot of research but nothing replaces hearing from people actually living it. Any honest perspective — positive or negative — genuinely appreciated.
