E0S 6D - first DSLR, and hopeful for pointers

Hoping to learn a bit of photography, so I got an E0s 6D, a 300mm f/4L IS USM, and the cheapest 50mm I could find. Never owned a DSLR before, and the last time I really tried to learn how to take a good picture was pre-digital! (Or, pre-useful digital, anyway.)

I went out and tried to get to grips with it. This skylark is by far the best picture I've taken so far, but that was mostly the bird's work!

I'm finding the autofocus hard work, but that might be because I'm not used to a real camera. So been shooting manually most of the time. Also finding adjusting settings on the fly very fiddly, hopefully that'll get better with practice or are there some tips and tricks there? (Still, changing ISO is easier than changing film!)
