L/100 don't be fooled

Maybe I'm just slow but I've just realized with the current fuel prices (Australia based)

A 7 l/100km Diesel is actually more expensive to run than a 9 l/100 unleaded fuel car.

Currently in Melb diesel is 2.45 per litre and petrol UL91 is 1.80

At these prices, the petrol engine is cheaper to run, costing $16.20 per 100km compared to $17.15 for the diesel. Even though the diesel car uses less fuel, the 36% price premium for diesel fuel 2.45 vs 1.80 outweighs its efficiency advantage.

Even if you bumped up the petrol to 10 l/100km it is about the same economically as a 7 l/100km diesel.

Then you have maintenance costs on top of that (higher usually for diesel).

Food for thought eh
