Identify, mid-adventure?

I've been playing 3.5e since the start, we have a 20 year campaign going with the group we started. Over the years, seeing how others play on YouTube, or how people talk on here, I was curious how other groups handle identifying magical items and potions while in the adventure. Meaning, no markets available or wiizards (outside the group) to do it. One of the YouTube groups I like watching most just tells the players, "you found a potion of water breathing, very useful", without paying someone to identify it, or use a spellcraft check. How hard-core, or lax, do other DMs go with identifying things?

Edit: I know the rules, I'm not asking how to do anything, I'm asking what others prefer to do
