Travel Router Advice: UniFi UTR vs. GL.iNet Opal vs. Beryl AX

Hey guys,

I’ll be working remotely while traveling and need a reliable travel router. I’m considering these three options:

UniFi Travel Router (UTR, standard version, NOT Long Range)
GL.iNet GL-SFT1200 (Opal)
GL.iNet GL-MT3000 (Beryl AX)

My main requirements are:

Reliable WireGuard VPN connection with good speeds
Easy setup on different hotel and restaurant Wi-Fi networks
Support for 2–3 devices max
Compact and portable size for traveling
Reliable performance for Teams meetings, screen sharing, and software development

I’ve heard the GL.iNet routers are better overall, but I prefer the UTR’s smaller size. Since hotel Wi-Fi will often be the bottleneck anyway, would the standard UTR be sufficient for my needs?

A few questions:

What WireGuard VPN speeds can I realistically expect from the UTR? Opal is limited to 65MBit/s and Beryl AX to 300 MBit/s. What about UTR?
How good is UTR its Wi-Fi reception when connecting to hotel Wi-Fi compared to a smartphone? If my iPhone can connect (range-wise), can I expect the UTR to connect reliably too?
How good is its Wi-Fi range for connected devices? How far away can those be?
Are the GL.iNet routers significantly better in practice, or would the UTR be sufficient for my use case?

I’d appreciate any real-world experiences or recommendations!

Rocket Mobile vs Skinny

Which SIM card offers better coverage on the South Island, especially at camping spots and in national parks?

I’m interested in the unlimited plans from either Rocket Mobile or Skinny. Rocket Mobile has a higher speed limit than Skinny, which makes it more appealing to me. However, I’ve heard that Skinny has better coverage in remote areas.

What do you think? Is Rocket Mobile’s (OneNZ) coverage really noticeably worse than Skinny’s (Spark), particularly in remote areas of the South Island and around national parks?

Camper Roadtrip - Ferry vs Flight

Hey everyone!

We are looking forward for an incredible 3 week roadtrip trough New Zealand in November!

We plan to rent (not buy) a campervan 🚐 and explore the south AND north island.

We are wondering if it would be better to rent one campervan for 3 weeks and take the ferry from the south to north island (in november) or renting 2 separate campervans on each island and take a flight in between NZ.

What would you recommend in terms of:
- Price
- Reliability
- Time
- Experience
?

Minimum Amount of Days for a Roadtrip in NZ both islands

Hey everyone!

We plan to do a roadtrip in NZ including both islands with a campervan in November! 🚐

We are on a longer trip and will combine it with New Zealand.
I am really unsure about how much time - at least - we would need for a good roadtrip.

I was thinking around 17-21 days for New Zealand excluding the flights in and out.

We want to focus on nature, some hikes, lakes and the beauty of NZ. Also we are okay with a paced speed of traveling. We do not need to have 2 days everywhere for relaxing. Also our priority is NOT to see every town or LotR scene.

What do you think? What would be the minimum amount of days for a roadtrip doing North AND South island to see the most important parts of NZ?
Also how would you split the amount of days between north and south island? 🇳🇿

(I understand that ofc more time would always be better, but we have limited time. So please understand that 😊)

EDIT: please understand that I really refer to the minimum amount of time and not a nice to have time.
