Skiing in the Zermatt Switzerland Glacier June 30th

Today I got up to the glacier ski area about 10.40 for a hour and 20mins of skiing, there was a thunder storm in Zermatt last night and it rained quite abit, this was snow up high, there was still some soft fresh untracked snow on the slopes, the next few days should be great, it takes about 40 minutes to ride up the Matterhorn glacier express gondola and the Matterhorn ride 2 to the ski area, and then just under a hour to get down in the lifts after the ski area closes at 12pm. I had a nice lasagne lunch at the top at Testa restaurant then came down, I was down at 1.50pm, Jason Wright ski instructor | guide

What to do in Zermatt (summer!)

As a professional ski instructor based in here Zermatt, for last 10 plus years I have traveled to the southern hemisphere to ski coach for the European summer months, but now I am staying here in Zermatt, and what I can tell you is it’s amazing! What we have been doing most days is going up to ski or snowboarding on the glacier early in the morning, usually 8.30- 12pm, but the lift does open at 6.30, this is when the ski racing teams go up. The after ski or snowboarding all morning when coming and have a lunch, so many great options.

Then in the afternoon my favourite and most recommended activity is Moutain E-biking! Is so much fun, with fairly easy roads to ride on.

You can rent them in town, and then take the lift one way up to Sunnegga and then the gondola up to blauheard and ridge all the way across the Moutain to the Riffelberg area and down through Furi, some days we do the amazing 5 lake tours and some we take the Moutain bike flow trails, with turns and small jumps, if you can ride a bike you can do it!

If you would like any advice or a guide to help you or teach you check out my social media Jasonleftwrightleft or leave a comment and I I’ll get back to you.

Skiing in Zermatt first time tips

I teach skiing in Zermatt and here’s what I tell everyone before they come

I instruct here so I get asked the same questions constantly. Figured I’d put the honest answers in one place.

How many days do you need?

Don’t come for 2 you’ll feel rushed and one bad weather day wrecks the trip. Aim for 5-7. The weather here is usually excellent and even when it turns, it rarely lasts more than 2-3 days. With a week you can ski a different area most days, eat at a few of the mountain restaurants, and rest your legs around day 3-4 (you’ll need it).

Is it worth the money?

It’s not cheap, but per kilometre of skiing and for the terrain and views, very little in Europe compares, the lift system, the snow reliability, the infrastructure. I see people come back from cheaper resorts feeling like they got less. It earns its reputation.

Where to stay,

If you’re a beginner, the single biggest mistake I see is people booking somewhere lovely but on the wrong side of town from the beginner slopes, then bussing to lessons every morning. Stay within walking distance of the Sunnegga lifts. The Cervo has a lift straight down to the funicular that drops you near the beginner area at Wolli’s Park it’s very easy.

Once you can ski properly, Winkelmatten is a great base right next to the Matterhorn Express, which is your gateway to Riffelberg, the glacier and the Italy (Cervinia) side. There are also great options to leaves yours skis and boots in a heated locker with dryers and the base of the Matterhorn express.

Lift pass tips most people miss

  1. First timers can take the funicular up to the beginner area without a full pass at all
  2. After that there’s a beginner pass covering a few blues and easy lifts
  3. Around 12:30 you can buy a half-day pass that gives full mountain access — and it’s sometimes cheaper than the beginner pass

When clients are improving, I often suggest morning lessons on the cheaper pass, then a half-day full pass for the afternoon. The Riffelberg blues are perfect for this wide, open, confidence-building runs.

The thing that actually unlocks the mountain

Two skills change everything for nervous skiers, side slipping and a solid hockey stop. Side slipping in particular takes the fear out of steeper sections, once you know you can always just side slip it opens up the whole Moutain, That’s worth more than any amount of beautiful pistes you’re too scared to use.

If you want lessons or a guide while you’re here, you’re welcome to find me — I post on Instagram as @jasonleftwrightleft. But even if you go with someone else, get a local who can show you the hidden lunch spots and read the conditions for you. It’s the best money you’ll spend on the trip.

So top tips are, get the right pass, if you are staying more than 15 min walk from where you want to ski, leave your skis and boots at the heated lockers over night, (always dry you goggles out every night, they can get moisture and then fog up the next day!

Happy to answer questions in the comments areas, runs, lunch spots, beginner stuff, whatever.

Riffelberg Zermatt Switzerland 🇨🇭

Have you skied in Riffelberg? Maybe you learned to ski parallel here with me 😎 blue 36 is my go to slope for learning to skiing the skis together all the way around the turn, and side slipping, one of the keys to all Moutain skiing.

Riffelberg is one of the most important hubs in the Zermatt ski area. It sits at 2,582 m on the Gornergrat side of the mountain and acts as a central connection point between Gornergrat, Furi, Schwarzsee, and the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise sectors.

Body position is number 1

Jasonleftwrightleft ski instructor Zermatt Switzerland 🇨🇭

With the right body position, a active balanced athletic stance you can move! Constant movement is the key to balance while skiing, your have to press on the ski, standing up to tall does not allow this, it works ok on flatter slopes, but to progress and stronger stance really helps, when your legs are bend you really get the turning power out of your legs as the muscles are contracted! As the old saying goes bend your knees and follow me!

Is Zermatt the best ski resort in the world?

I think as a whole, Zermatt is the best resort in the world, it has been voted number one many times, for me it’s the adventure, it’s skiing from one side of Zermatt town right around the town to the base of the Matterhorn and then over the ridge and deep down into the Italian side, it’s definitely more of a intermediate Moutain but not advanced, if you can ski parallel you can ski the whole 360km maybe the odd black slope will need to be avoided, but they can be avoided that’s the great part. For beginners the Sunnegga area combined with the Riffelberg blue slopes has the perfect terrain for learning the basics!
