Apple Adjustable Keyboard 1993: Fix and Retrobright

Fixing up this adjustable keyboard, it was not pivoting properly. And going to give it a Retrobright. Released in 1993 at the same time as the short-lived Centris 610.
Not looking forward to putting this back together. Missing the palm rests

Atari 2600 and 800 Wireless Joysticks

Picked up an Atari 800 on an Auction and these Wireless joysticks came along with it. About twice as thick as the original 2600 joystick. Looks like they are new in box. They use a 9V Battery and fortunately the look unused. Will try once I get THE Atari 800 working.

AOL 10 Foot UI

An experiment from 2005 on what an AOLTV interface would look like on Broadband. Similar to what ended up on AppleTV and other streaming apps.

Blurb: Retirement of Booksmart, move to BookWright

Having a really hard time moving from Booksmart to Bookwright. I'd used Booksmart for 20 years for our family phonebooks. I suppose no tech last forever, but I find Bookwright slow and hard to use on a Mac.
Specifics:

  1. Each page has to be given a specific layout. I used to copy the full page layout to all pages and then only modify the ones I needed.
  2. The text boxes have to be clicked on several times before you can paste text into them.
  3. I get a lot of "beach balling" on the Mac when the app starts up.
  4. Layouts are a pain, I'm gradually adding the ones I use to My Layouts, but never had to do this in Booksmart.

The whole process is taking my 4x longer. I suppose I'll get better at it, but such as pain right now.

Root ball cutting, tree dead 4 years later

Looking for advice in Montgomery County Maryland.

We backup on an apartment building that was built 4 years ago.  At the time, we warned the builder about not disturbing the root balls on the mature trees that grew on the property line and we co-owned.  They established a Limit of Disturbance, and worked with an arborist.  We took extensive pictures and had an independent arborist come out that worked for us.  They said we wouldn't know for 3-5 years.

4 years later and the mature maple is dead.
Do I have any recourse?

Attaching 4 pieces for Christmas Tree

I’m trying to attach these 4 pieces together to form a wood Christmas tree. It’s Baltic birch. These are off cuts from another Christmas tree project (see photo 3)

I’d have done this differently for an original project, but now I’m trying to use these off cuts.

How can I attach these 4 pieces together to make a tree? 🌲

Kumiko Laser Cut Privacy Screen

Very excited to have access to a laser cutter again! Did this Kumiko inspired privacy screen around the HVAC Condenser. The sides are hidden by bushes so they just got pressure treated lattice. Baltic birch is sealed with penetrating epoxy and spar varnish. The framing and base have weep holes to prevent water pooling.

Boxed Software: I miss it

My MicroCenter is old enough to still have up the Software sign for when they had boxed software. I miss the days when there were rows of boxed software. This MicroCenter even had a dedicated Apple section in the dark 1990s.

▲ 1 r/HyundaiSantaFe+1 crossposts

I have the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid. Lots to love about the car, especially the 30 miles on electric from the hybrid drive train. But there are some major drawbacks that are really annoying me over time. Hank Green called out many of these in his YouTube video, so It seems these problems still exist and why I wouldn't buy a Hyundai/Kai again.

  1. Nanny Messages: I have to dismiss two messages EVERY TIME I turn on the car! The messages don't appear until I'm already driving, so I have to take my eyes off the round. This is insane and dangerous!
  2. Bluetooth/CarPlay Stuck: Maybe 5% of the time the bluetooth connection to my phone for CarPlay doesn't work. but also doesn't fail gracefully. So I drive around indefinitely with the "Connecting to CarPlay" message on the screen with no way to exit the screen! This has persisted across multiple iPhones. It's also dangerous because I mess around trying to disconnect Bluetooth while driving with no way to get back to Google Maps or any other app.
  3. Backup Trash Truck: Why can't I turn off the annoyingly loud backup noise? I sound like a trash truck. I researched this seriously considered taking a screw driver to the speaker.
  4. Backup Camera: The backup camera doesn't disappear when you put the car in drive. It often take 50 yards for it to cut off a release the screen. Then you have to dismiss the messages!

There are other annoying features like seizing control of the wheel, refusing to accelerate and incorrectly saying the car in front of me is pulling away. I'm just tired of fighting the stupid electronics and poor design of this car!

I’m experimenting on bending Baltic birch 3/4”. With 10 cuts it has these ridges. I’d try more cuts but then I’d need a narrower kerf table saw blade.

Any way to not get the ridges? Should I sand them out since I’ll be applying a walnut veneer on the final piece.

I used this calculator to calculate the cuts. https://www.blocklayer.com/kerf-spacingeng
