MBTA Commuter Rail Daytrips?

The MBTA Commuter Rail offers an unlimited weekend pass for $10, and they are also offering FREE rides on Friday through Labor Day.

I don't think I can take advantage of the Free Friday rides, but am looking for interesting weekend day trips from Providence this fall.

Where do all the lawn signs go?

I don't put up political lawn signs, so I'm not sure how it works. Are they collected, recycled, reused, upcycled, trashed?

I love the Newport Folk and Jazz lawn signs (pictured above)

La Broa en tu Barrio (play)

From the Valley Breeze article dated July 15, 2026:

This year’s Teatro en El Verano (Summer Theatre) program, hosted by Rhode Island Latino Arts (RILA) and Trinity Repertory Company, is bringing a new adaptation of the acclaimed “La Broa,” which premiered at Trinity Rep in 2024, to parks across the state.

Wildfire Smoke in RI

I took this photo a couple of years ago during a period of wildfire smoke. It happened another time when I was driving from South County. That time, the skies turned several colors. It was surreal, but since I was driving, I didn't get any pictures.

We are now under an Air Quality Alert. Partly due to smoke, and partly due to heat and humidity.

It's best to stay indoors if you can, but definitely look for an interesting sunset tonight.

Shakespeare in the Park?

I remember a RI based Shakespeare company who was doing Summertime plays around Providence. That was a few years ago.

I remember one production in the courtyard at The Guild in Pawtucket. It was a nice evening, with brews and food trucks. I'd like to do it again.

Any info about theater companies doing plays outdoors in RI this summer would be appreciated!

Did the Sox fire the wrong guy?

Let's talk about this season only. Longer term gets a lot more complicated.

I think we all agree that the construction of the team is the real problem, and that Breslow should go.

Ironically, Cora got fired (maybe on purpose) for criticizing the team that Breslow built and the analytics that Breslow installed. He was not very subtle about it.

Whatever you think about Cora, I think he could have better reclaimed this season. His goal was October baseball THIS year.

I think they fired the wrong guy.

RWP Temple To Music

We *tried* to go to the Juneteenth Festival today, and completely struck out. There is only ONE WAY in on a ONE WAY road. The minute we got stuck in gridlock, I regretted my decision to go up that hill.

The same thing has happened to me going to the Dominican Festival and the RWP Pops concerts. They are fantastic events, but the traffic is even worse!

In the future, I think I'll park below and hike in. My SO had surgery recently, so that wasn't an option today.

I'm not sure what magic r/providence can do about the problem, but there has to be a better way!

One thought I had was to not allow parking on the left hand side, and provide a separate lane for those who just want to get past the gridlock. Or some way to turn around and not add to the gridlock.

Scots Drink Boston Dry

Multiple reports from Boston describe bars and package stores running out of beer. Irish Bar owners say they sold three times what they sell on St Paddy's Day. Servers reported record tips.

The Scottish visitors are surely drinking a lot, but by all accounts they are not making trouble and spreading good cheer wherever they go.

How are Providence businesses doing?

What Cheer, netop?

Live Music Calendars?

I'm an active music fan from Providence and will be staying in Eastham next Wed and Thu. So I'll have Jun 17 and 18. I've looked into many of the Cape's music venues and I don't see much of interest (to me).

I often plan a visit around some show of interest, but I didn't get to pick the dates this time. I'd like to see a show at the Payomet Center, for example if and would plan a future visit around that.

I've been to The Beachcomber, back in the days when The Incredible Casuals played every Sunday. I've missed the music there, but I tend to visit before they open or after they close. I would love it if they extended their season.

I know a lot of musicians in several different New England music scenes. Providence has a surprisingly good jazz and bluegrass scenes, Cambridge has Americana, Celtic, and some amazing Berklee grads. A lot of them play Cape venues, but sadly not while I will be there.

I generally avoid dance and cover bands. No offense intended.

Let me know if you have ideas or web pages to check.

One backup plan is to see Cape Cod baseball on Thursday. Never been, but always wanted to go.

WRWC Greenway Rail Painting

I joined a group of volunteers to help with the WRWC Greenway painting project in the area near Farm Fresh RI. It's not quite ready for paint, so today's assignment was to scrape lichen from rails.

We were joined by 50 students on a field trip who helped with scraping, trash pickup, etc.

Did anyone see the meteor?

I'm seeing video on the national news showing a perfectly sunny day and clear path of the meteor.

I believe it was a meteor, but Saturday was horrible here and I thought it was cloudy in all of southern NE.

I think TMZ shared the video. And I'm sure it would look just like that on a sunny day, and even more spectacular on a clear night.

There were similar meteors in South Carolina and Ohio last week. It's likely that it was sunnier in both of those locations.

Maybe I missed the disclaimer, but the news people clearly thought it was footage from New England. I'm not buying it.

Rhode Island was the original #NoKings state. The Old State House was unveiled after a multi-million dollar renovation to celebrate the 250th anniversary.

A little history...

On May 4, 1776, Rhode Island passed the Act of Renunciation, becoming the first American colony to officially renounce allegiance to King George III and break ties with Great Britain, two months before the national Declaration of Independence.
