Confusion over gallon sizes
Edit: many countries outside of the US use litres, so when I see gallons in here I convert to understand and it seems that is what many non US people are doing too. But we are likely converting the wrong gallon bc in places outside the US, Google assumes we are using imperial. I think many of us didn’t even realise the US used a different gallon, so didn’t know we were converting the wrong thing to litres! Anyway this is your warning: they’re talking about US gallons!!!!!!
OG post:
This might not be wholly relevant, so feel free to downvote and I can delete, but does this sub have any standardisation or etiquette when talking about tank sizes?
Because I’ve realised a lot of people talk about gallons, but US gallons are 20% smaller than imperial gallons and I’ve never seen somebody specify to which they are referring to? I’ve also got a sneaking suspicion this is a small part of the reason people frequently get into disagreements about what stock can go into what size tank, especially as we are talking about such small tanks where that 20% can make a fair difference. Two people can be saying gallon and mean different sizes eg.
10 US gallons ≈ 8 imperial gallons
So, am I missing the memo on what gallon we use? If there’s no standardisation, is it worth having one? Probably not but curious to see what you have to say about it!
(If you also saw this in aquariums, sorry! I’m confused in both 😅)
