The City Fathers

OK, I really hate this recent revelation that Mega City One is now apparently protected by some ancient shadowy cabal of supernatural guardians who will magically defend the city in exchange for the sacrifice of surplus characters the writers can't think of what to do with.

Apart from rendering Dredd ultimately pretty pointless as a character if these guys can just show up and hand-wave away a threat, where exactly were they during the Apocalypse War, Necropolis, on Judgement Day, Chaos Day, or any of the half dozen other city-ending threats?

I've never liked the spook stories anyway - the Dark Judges and the occasional vampire or werewolf is quite enough - but the City Fathers feels like an idea that does not belong to this strip. Any thoughts?

Baby fur seal/kekeno at Cornwallis Beach last weekend.

A sleek and healthy young kekeno/fur seal at Cornwallis Beach last weekend. Luckily I had the long lens, so it was aware of my presence but not disturbed, and I was able to spend some time with it before it returned to the water.

Dammit, Pterry: Hogfather Edition.

I'm re-reading the Death series, and I'm up to Hogfather again, for perhaps the fourth or fifth time. It's Hogswatchnight, at Unseen University there's a loud knocking at the door and the Senior Wrangler is expecting wassailers. All well and good, thinks I, who knows what wassailers* are. And then Ridcully asks, "Well, now, wassailing you fellows - " - and I've only just got that. What's ailing you fellows? Dammit, Pterry.
