Rod/reel suggestion: pier Spanish mackerel
So, I typically boat fish, or beach fish. I do have some pier fishing gear but it’s for heavy tackle and big fish, bull reds, sailfish, tarpon, jacks, etc. (12’+ heavy rods, 6-8000 series reels, 80-100 lb line)
I’ll be doing some Spanish fishing off a pier next month, and need to maximize cast distance using a bubble rig. Last year I used my speck rods, but they’re in the 6-7’ range since that’s my boat setup.
Those heavy rods are too tiring doing constant cast/retrieve for 2-3 hours, and leads to inaccuracy on cast, which is omportant because the pier will be absolutely packed shoulder to shoulder if they’re running.
Am thinking something in the moderate action, light to medium power, and prefer 9-10’ ft length I would think, 3000 series reel?
Most of my spinning reels are Penn fierce, been solid for the price. Would like to step up in quality a bit with this purchase, I have way more rods than reels as reels are more versatile than rods are. I do have a few good shamano baitcasters I could use instead with proper rods, but cast distance is the biggest issue, if the water is cloudy (they’ll be a bit further out than end of pier). I’ll be dealing with incoming tides for a few days with a significant tide (4.5’ tide) and a slack tide for 2 days (<8” diff between high and low all day)
