Hellooo so I fostered a 3 month old kitten, she was very very nervous and didn’t leave her crate for a few days. We had a playpen set up with the litter box inside and she peed and pooped there very well. After a while we opened the playpen door permanently so she has access to the whole house as well. I recently returned her for desexing two days ago and picked her back up yesterday for adoption. I got her a new litter box, it’s quite similar but not as simple as her old one. The litter is the same and it’s in the same location just without the playpen. She pooped in it but I woke up this morning and she had peed through 5 layers of bedding. The place I adopted her from told me she hadn’t toileted much or at all while she was there after her desexing.

I’m hoping it is just some stress and adjustment issues to the new litter box and loss of the playpen, but is there any advice for how I could get her to use the new litter box? I really want to know how I can stop her peeing elsewhere so it doesn’t become a habit!
