Amaryllis color instability
I bought this clearance Amaryllis from Walmart around Christmas in the winter of ‘24. Because I had so many bulbs and managing so many large plants inside the house while outdoor temps are freezing was such a pain that year, I decided to forego the holiday blooming season this year and didn’t break dormancy until the danger of frost was over so that all the plants could spend their full growing season on my east-facing covered porch. The first to bloom this season is this so-called ‘Stargazer.’ It clearly isn’t and never was the expected red with white stripes, but the most interesting thing about this bulb is how much the color and size of the flower has changed since the previous bloom! First pic is today’s flower, second is the label showing what I expected, third is the previous season’s bloom of the same bulb. How common is color instability in amaryllis? Is this just what I get for trying to get cheap bulbs when I was suffering from absolute mania for these gorgeous flowers? Now I’m wondering if any of my other bulbs (9 of my 12 have flower scapes this year!) are holding surprises for me!
