The hunt for a specific custom map MIDI file
Greetings Dukesters,
I've got a bit of a random question, one I've spent more than a generous amount of hours on solving myself, but to no avail.
As a kid, I used to play a lot of Duke Nukem 3D on PC, including stuff from all the available Duke Nukem custom map pack CDs I could get my grubby little hands on. Some of these maps included their own MIDI music files, be they ripped from other games, MIDI imitations of real songs, or entirely original.
I recently recalled one of these specific MIDI files, but no matter how much I've scoured the internet, I haven't been able to find it... and I know that it may or may not be fully related to Duke Nukem, but given my "exposure" to it being in connection with various custom Duke Nukem maps, I hope that this post will be allowed.
From what I can recall, the file was called "Roq.mid", though I also seem to remember the name "Empty Halls"; but of course, given the nature of the song not really being identifiable, this could be a red herring.
Regardless, the best way to describe the song would be something like a slow Gregorian chant; simple, melodic, not too many instruments, and said song not really having a lead instrument or song (or at least not in this MIDI version). There's also a large church-like bell ringing scarcely through the song, but always matching to the rhythm.
After around 4-5 minutes, most instruments fade out, leaving only the large church-like bell ringing a couple of times - then, out of nowhere, drums, a bass, and a rhythm guitar part starts playing. It's the same tune, just slightly faster. Then comes in a lead guitar, playing what could almost be described as a solo, with the whole "rock" piece consisting of somewhere between 1½ to 2 minutes, after which the song goes back the the previous style for about a minute, before it then fully fades out. The entire song is, if I recall correctly, somewhere around the 8-minute mark in length, but given the fact that this was nearly twenty years ago, I may be very wrong about this.
I'm not much of a MIDI music creator, but using a free online tool I did make and export this snippet of what I could recall from some of the rock part of the song: https://filebin.net/92brwpl7l8lmc38e/song.mp3 (the link expires in a week from today).
Does anyone know which MIDI file this originated from, and more importantly, where I'd be able to get my hands on it?
