Love their contributions button :) "Like a distinguished eighteenth-century patron..." / "Tel un distingué mécène du dix-huitième siècle..."

You can just make a donation to support them 😄 (in Canadian dollars)

Original: "Tel un distingué mécène du dix-huitième siècle, faites un don sans contrepartie pour soutenir le travail des artistes."

Google Translation: "Like a distinguished eighteenth-century patron, make a donation without expecting anything in return to support the work of artists."

I like this a lot as I don't really have anything on which to play their records (YouTube so far) and am probably a bit too Angine de 'Poids'-trine to fit in the t-shirts 😉

Article: "Everything You Wanted to Know About the Weird Polka-Dot Band With Gonzo Noses That's Seemingly Everywhere Now But Were Afraid to Ask"

I enjoyed this article about (it doesn't say anything about who the Poitrines are beneath their masks, so no spoilers) and didn't find it here already. It also made me laugh and there were so many paragraphs or snippets I wanted to share but I particularly like this one -

>"Plenty of bands wear masks. Plenty of bands play in odd time. Plenty of bands have incomprehensible vocals, ceremonial stage gestures, and song titles that look like they were found under a refrigerator. Very few make all of that feel festive. Most difficult music asks for patience. This music behaves like it has burst through the wall carrying its own hors d’oeuvres."

Morning all

I've created a petition on the UK Government's Petitions website. While I'd be amazed if it ever gets to being discussed in Parliament (it has 8 votes so far, from kindly disposed pals or indulgent strangers) I'm hoping it might marginally raise awareness of a small thing which I think could be helpful to jobseekers.

Encourage company websites to add a "/jobs" page redirect https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/768264/sponsors/new?token=5StLn9oHKhwFNzykZ98k

I think because the petition has not yet been approved the text OF the petition doesn't appear on it, but it's this -

"Simplify & harmonise job searching on organisations' websites.
Organisations might call 'jobs' by a variety of names: Careers, Vacancies, Recruitment, Employment, Work for us, Work with us etc. A /jobs redirect lets them call it whatever they like while making it easier to find for jobseekers.

I think a central push might encourage implementation.
Currently organisations' websites are a bit piecemeal in terms of where they hide their vacancies page(s). Some don't have a dedicated page at all and instead put job adverts in 'news'. This seems a bit inefficient. It seems daft not to make it as easy as possible for those seeking jobs to be able to uncover them more easily. If voluntary it might not happen, hence suggesting a role for parliamentary persuasion."

An accompanying blog post with context https://brodiesnotes.blogspot.com/2026/04/please-sign-my-uk-parliament-petition.html

Ideally I'd like it to be a 'thing' where anyone visiting a website can just type /jobs at the end of the site's address to see what jobs are available, in the way that everyone undersands that clicking the logo will return you to the homepage.

You might find the jobs page in 'About us' or lurking in the links at the bottom of the page but quite often you'll have to search, and it might not be called 'jobs'. It's all over the place 😉

Thanks
Jo

Here are vacancies pages belonging to ~180 UK companies, every so often I add more https://strayjobs.wordpress.com/vacancies-pages/#great-big-list-of-181-organisations-vacancies-pages

My professional interest is in computer science and science communication so the organisations skew toward science (though computer scientists are employed in every sector!)

There are several ways organisations might share their jobs - (1) published to major jobs boards (can cost money so not all orgs do this), (2) on their own vacancies pages (most places do this but not all) and (3) the less publicly visible roles (e.g. where someone is headhunted, or involves connections / networks where a current employee might let you know that a vacancy is imminent). My list relates to (2).

I think it would help if organisations had a /jobs page (or a /jobs redirect) so that anyone visiting their homepage could find out what vacancies they had by literally typing /jobs at the end of the address to find them. Lots do have a jobs page but you might find it hidden in 'About us' or linked at the bottom of the page, or it might be hidden in vacancies, recruitment, careers, work for us, work with us etc etc, sometimes it just goes in 'news'. Plus organisations keep moving pages around during site refreshes so I'm sure my list above will go out of date within a year!.

To that end I've created a UK petition - I doubt it will reach the threshold of parliamentary debate but I'm hoping it raises awareness of one way in which employers could make it marginally easier for people to find (as in hear about) vacancies.

Sign the petition: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/768264/sponsors/new?token=5StLn9oHKhwFNzykZ98k
Read more about the petition: (each petition must be approved and published, mine's still at the 'being checked' stage so there's not much info on the page itself): https://brodiesnotes.blogspot.com/2026/04/please-sign-my-uk-parliament-petition.html

Thanks
