I want to be a kidney donor for my brother who lives in California, but I live in Oklahoma. After a lot of back and forth between his hospital and my local hospital, I finally got the recommendation to go to Medical City Hospital in Texas because they are a “sister hospital” to the one in CA with a voucher program where I can donate to someone locally that needs a kidney, and then my brother should receive a kidney right away.
The communication from Medical City Hospital has not been good. I registered with them last December, but no one contacted me, so I reached back out in January. I finally got ahold of and spoke to their living donor advocate in January. They set me up to have labs done, and I got those completed around the end of February. I received an email with my lab results maybe a week after they were done, and assumed Medical City received them about the same time. I waited for them to contact me saying they got my results, but no call.
In April I finally got ahold of the living donor advocate again (after leaving voicemails with no call back) and they said they didn’t know why my labs hadn’t been reviewed yet, but they were “ just about to contact me about them”. They said there have been several living donors that have registered recently, so they’ve been busy..
The advocate told me my results looked good and another associate was going to call me to go over education on next steps for testing and surgery.
I was supposed to receive that call over a week ago.
This Friday I tried to call the hospital since again no one has reached out to me, and I could only leave a voicemail with the advocate. When I tried to call the transplant center, the phone rang and rang and never even went to voicemail. Their hours are Monday-Friday from 8am to 5pm which are my work hours… so it’s hard for me to work out a good time to call them back.
So is this really unusual? Should I be concerned over the poor communication from this hospital and how I’ve almost always had to reach out to them instead of them reaching out to me? With my situation, this is the best hospital to use, but I’m getting really frustrated and a little nervous with the lack of communication.
