All Officina 8 recalled for... Mirror labels

Piaggio Group Americas has announced a recall for the Vespa GTV 310, Vespa Primavera 150, and Vespa Primavera 50 in the special edition Officina 8 livery because they may have been shipped with the wrong mirrors. The recall affects 285 scooters in the U.S. market.

“What’s the big deal?” You may ask. “Mirrors are mirrors, right?”

Well, in the general sense, yes. As long as the mirrors are suitably reflective and are angled the correct way, they are functionally mirrors.

To be more specific, the problem is that the affected Vespas were shipped European mirror sets and not U.S. mirror sets. What’s the difference? The European mirrors lack labels saying “Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear,” a safety warning legally required on vehicle mirrors in the U.S., Canada, and several other markets.

Piaggio Group Americas became aware of the problem when someone at the factory realized they had a bunch of USA-spec mirrors lying around. An investigation quickly discovered the labeled mirrors were not added to the vehicle crates before shipping.

The recall only affects scooters in the special edition Officina 8 Blu colorway. All other color options should have the correct mirrors.

Vespa dealers will inspect recalled scooters and install new mirrors bearing the warning labels. Piaggio estimates the process should take no more than 10 minutes.
