Tried to make this 1984 Colonial kitchen feel updated without fighting the old beams/floors

Before and after from a kitchen remodel in Vernon, CT.

This was a 1984 Colonial with wide pine floors, exposed beams, and a lot of original character, so we didn’t want the new kitchen to feel like it was fighting the house.

The old layout had plenty going on, but the storage and proportions felt a little off. Our main goal was to make it feel cleaner and more functional without stripping out what made the space interesting.

We ended up doing fully custom cabinetry in Hale Navy, a farmhouse sink, an integrated fridge, glass-front upper cabinets, and a built-in coffee/appliance garage area.

One of the trickier parts was getting the cabinet layout to feel balanced around the existing beams, openings, and some not-so-perfect old house measurements. There was a little back and forth on alignment, but it came together once everything was in place.

Thoughts? Opinions? I appreciate any feedback!

A semi custom kitchen project in Glastonbury, CT. Featuring Designer’s Choice frameless kitchen cabinetry in Chaulk White, paired with soapstone countertops and warm red oak floors.

The main goal was a classic kitchen that felt open, organized, and easy to use.

As always, happy to answer any questions.

From a project in West Hartford, CT alongside Oxford Builders.

This one was part of a full remodel/addition for a family with two young kids, so our goal was to make the kitchen feel clean and elevated but still functional.

The curved island is what really anchors the whole space.

Fully custom cabinets with a focus on details that actually get used day to day. A couple favorites from the homeowners were a hidden touch-latch cabinet and an automatic open trash pullout, but there’s a lot of smaller storage stuff built in throughout the kitchen that don’t stand out right away but end up being the things you use the most.

We also carried matching cabinetry into the great room, laundry, and primary bath.
