Can I self-teach myself to build this?

My wife and I currently have two desks as shown in the drawing, and are using some folding tables next to the window to have some auxiliary space, but it really is getting cramped. My wife has nowhere to display her figurines, and my PC is just one bump from dropping to the ground.

So I have been dreaming up this solution: to have more surface area next to us for papers, my PC, etc, some drawers on our side, some storage space below, and some shelves to display anything we'd usually have lying on and around our desks.

I am an engineer, so I have some basic carpentry knowledge. I have built some basic furniture before too, but I wanted to get the opinion of experts/people who have done cabinetry before.

Am I crazy to think I could build this myself? Are there critical things that I'm missing?

My plan is to:

  1. Model the assembly in Autodesk to measure out every piece and make an inventory

  2. Order everything out of plywood already cut to size and laminated on the visible sides/edges

  3. Build the toekicks and install/level them

  4. Assemble the cabinets, dividing into three sections (left, middle, and right), with one single top over them. Thinking of going with butt joints and dowels since I can't easily make dados/grooves.

  5. Assemble the bookcase/shelves. Again, thinking of joining the shelves to the panels with dowels, and adding invisible brackets attached to the wall, going through the panel and into the shelves.

  6. Install the glass. The fixed side glass panel would be held up by glass clamps on the back wall, and the lower shelf, and the doors would be held up by hinges to the wall and their respective side glass panel.

Panel dishwasher problem

Just had countertops installed and when they tried to put in the dishwasher bracket we discovered the opening is off by 3/16 by the cabinet installers. I checked the specs of the dishwasher - it will still fit but the panel will not since it is 24 inches.

Any ideas on how to fix. Should we try to shave down the opening or build a smaller panel?

Unique Inset Hinge advice needed for unusual face frame cabinet

Installing an inset door in a kitchen cabinet, there are a few locations like this in this kitchen. It's an unusual remodel. My crude drawing shows which way the door needs to open. Cabinets are actually face frame despite this unusual joint. I'm looking for a soft-close hinge (or any hinge, really) that will work. Other side of the cabinet is a mirror image of this, so flipping the opening direction changes nothing. Does this exist anywhere?

How to repair falling apart kitchen cupboards?

I live in a rented property (my landlord doesn't usually mind me putting up shelves/painting etc) and my kitchen cupboards look awful. They really let the kitchen down, it's only the few cupboards in the pictures with these issues and obviously I'm not going to replace my landlords entire kitchen...

Is there anything I can do to improve/replace for less than about £80? I thought I'd be able to maybe just wrap them but the surface is so uneven and the cupboard just keeps flaking more all the time :(

Any help appreciated!!!

First full kitchen spray stain job on maple

Jesus Mary and Joseph spray staining can kick rocks. I’m new to the spray staining especially with maple. Aside from the edges I feel that it turned out ok. But I’d like to hear your thoughts!

Reasonably priced cabinet hardware for kitchen remodel

We are at the cabinet stage of our remodel and just got a sticker shock quote and need to pivot to a more reasonably priced brand or series. I am keenly aware of needing not to cheap out on hardware but we cannot afford to spend $24 on a knob, either.

Any suggestions welcome! Thanks very much.

What is your go-to spray finish?

Curious what your go-to primer and finish is for refinishing cabinets with airless or HVLP? I have always used Gemini lacquer and sanding sealer for new projects but haven’t had experience with a refinish yet. What are your go-to paints?

Is this all custom if you had to guess?

My parents inherited this house. I really like the way their cabinets are, trying to figure out these are custom and a estimate of cost

Can anyone guesstimate what this would cost?

We want to build a box around our current old fireplace and install an electric fireplace insert and have some built ins put in surrounding it. In Massachusetts

Bar cabinet mystery 🤨

These are by bar cabinet doors. This set up is identical on both doors. What are these leather loops for? Thin cordial or tasting glasses?

Does anybody know how to make these types of doors?

Has anybody made these types of doors/drawers before? These types of doors/drawers usually are partially inset into face frame, and are rounded over on all sides. They don't have edge banding, so how are the plys hidden? Is the stain so dark that the plys are not noticable? The drawer fronts could be solid piece of oak, but I doubt the doors are.

Office Built-in Design Thoughts

Thoughts on this builtin design?

It’s a smaller office, so I’m thinking about using 33"W x 36"H x 12"D wall cabinets sitting on a 2x4 platform instead of full-depth base cabinets. I’d bump the whole thing out to 18" deep so I can fit a mini fridge in the cavity on the end and keep it flush with the cabinet fronts.

Planning on adding a ledger across the top to screw the cabinets into as well.

The image on the right shows the 2x4 structure with the cabinets, countertop, and fillers removed.

Any improvements or things I’m overlooking? TIA!

Installer messed up cabinet installation, doors won't fit.

Our cabinet installer didn't put a filler piece against these cabinets and the doors wont fit. He told us it was his mistake and would fix it. That was 6 months ago and we're still withholding final payment and he has basically ghosted us. What could we do here?

The dreaded bubbles

Hi all,

I have recently used 0.6mm walnut peel and stick veneer and it was perfect at application but then started to bubble over a couple of days. I habe tried the iron method and it helped for about 45 seconds 🤣

I then tried pinning a small hole and pressing them down but still no luck.

What is best to do try to get rid of these bubbles next? They are lighter in colour as I did a very (very) light sanding to highlight them.

Where to Put 15" Garbage Pullout?

I’m trying to figure out where to put a 15" garbage pullout in my small kitchen. I was hoping I could get rid of the Lazy Susan and put it in one of the corners, but it doesn’t seem possible, even if I go down to a 30" sink base. It seems like my only option is to put it to the left of the sink, but then I’d have to change my 24" drawers to a 12" or 15" cabinet. Would you do that or just put the garbage under the sink and keep the bigger drawers? I could also get a 33" fridge instead of 36" and put the garbage between the range and fridge, but that seems like kind of a weird spot.

Sorry, I know this is a lot! I need to order the cabinets ASAP and can’t decide.

Countertop question

My question is how to join a standard width countertop to a bar width. My pics show the countertop and a drawing of how I think it might go. Am I on the right track? This sub has been a godsend. Im done quite a bit of home improvement work but never tackled cabinets. Edit to say these will be formica countertops.

Hinge Help, Please

I have a cabinet door that was sent to me by the cabinet manufacturer because the first was the wrong size. The hinges are already installed on the door, and I just need to add the door. The hinge has two little "fangs" like the image above, far left, so the hinge doesn't sit flush against the inner part of the cabinet. I'm not sure what these small points are meant to do, since none of my existing cabinet have any such structure. I'm walking at screwing them into the cabinet itself as a result but I'd like some advice. I tried Google but without knowing what the points are called nor their function, it was not very productive.

Thank you for any advice you can provide.

Cabinet quote comparison, Is Frameless really worth a 20 - 30% premium over traditional Face Frame?

We are currently planning our full kitchen overhaul and reviewing detailed cabinet estimates from a couple of local design shops. Our main goal is maximizing usable storage in a fairly tight L shaped layout. One local company gave us a quote for traditional face frame cabinets with full overlay doors, while another designer at Cabinet IQ walked us through a sleek frameless (European style) option. However, the frameless estimate came in roughly 25% higher overall, which threw a wrench into our initial budget projections.

The Construction Dilemma

The designer explained that frameless construction provides wider drawer boxes, better interior accessibility, and eliminates center stiles on double cabinets. On paper, gaining those extra few inches of clear storage opening sounds fantastic for storing our larger pots and appliances. Still, a $4,500 jump just for box construction feels steep when the door profile looks almost identical from the outside.

  1. Does frameless box construction truly feel noticeably sturdier and more spacious over years of daily use?

  2. Is that 20% to 30% price premium justified, or should we put that extra money toward upgraded stone countertops instead?
