Can I self-teach myself to build this?
My wife and I currently have two desks as shown in the drawing, and are using some folding tables next to the window to have some auxiliary space, but it really is getting cramped. My wife has nowhere to display her figurines, and my PC is just one bump from dropping to the ground.
So I have been dreaming up this solution: to have more surface area next to us for papers, my PC, etc, some drawers on our side, some storage space below, and some shelves to display anything we'd usually have lying on and around our desks.
I am an engineer, so I have some basic carpentry knowledge. I have built some basic furniture before too, but I wanted to get the opinion of experts/people who have done cabinetry before.
Am I crazy to think I could build this myself? Are there critical things that I'm missing?
My plan is to:
Model the assembly in Autodesk to measure out every piece and make an inventory
Order everything out of plywood already cut to size and laminated on the visible sides/edges
Build the toekicks and install/level them
Assemble the cabinets, dividing into three sections (left, middle, and right), with one single top over them. Thinking of going with butt joints and dowels since I can't easily make dados/grooves.
Assemble the bookcase/shelves. Again, thinking of joining the shelves to the panels with dowels, and adding invisible brackets attached to the wall, going through the panel and into the shelves.
Install the glass. The fixed side glass panel would be held up by glass clamps on the back wall, and the lower shelf, and the doors would be held up by hinges to the wall and their respective side glass panel.
