Russian Old Believers (Starovery) in the Far East were a unique ethno-confessional group that sought refuge in this remote region to escape centuries of persecution following the 17th-century Great Schism. Known for their strict adherence to pre-reform Orthodox traditions and rituals, they have historically maintained a highly isolated, self-sufficient lifestyle. Following the 1917 Revolution, many Old Believer communities fled communist purges against Christians, establishing settlements in China and later migrating to South America. Despite decades in exile, the majority of such communities remained very isolated and true to their beliefs and traditions to this day. In recent years, the story has come full circle, as many Old Believer families are now returning from countries like Brazil and Uruguay to the Russian Far East under government resettlement programs.
