So there’s this specific trope that I see happen sometimes, but I don’t think it has a name or is often referred to. It’s when a character suddenly is treated as a legend to everybody in sequel. They are showered with admiration and there are countless lines where other characters are indirectly telling the audience how amazing and special that character is. Sometimes these changes are justified because that character did something really special and important in the original or its implied that they probably did a lot of stuff between the original and the start of the sequel, but in the case of this trope it’s as though they always were famous and the original just somehow forgot to indicate that. The sudden change is really because fans liked the character in the original so they made it so that everybody in the story glorified how great, cool and awesome that character is.

Like if there was a movie franchise called “The Clean Up” and it starred Jerry the Janitor, and it was a box office smash, then in the sequel, “The Clean Up 2”, Jerry the janitor is no longer considered any ordinary janitor, but the greatest janitor mankind has ever known.

For a real world example I point to Men In Black II. Agent K was a badass in the first movie, but there was nothing in the story saying that he was one of a kind or special in the M.I.B.. If anything it kinda seemed implied that almost world ending threats were a somewhat regular occurrence for the line of work of an M.I.B. agent. At the end of the first movie Agent K asks for Agent J to neuralize him and serve as his replacement so that he could retire and go back to living the married life. But everybody seemed to really love Tommy Lee Jones because he came back in the sequel. Then everybody in the sequel continuously talked again and again about how legendary Agent K actually was and how he was the greatest agent to ever exist. Sure Agent K saved the world in the last movie, but Agent J also did and nobody remotely treated him with any kind of admiration. So Agent K returns to the story and is no longer just one of the M.I.B. agents, but instead the most famous and well-known agent of all time.
