Hello, I'm new here. I briefly did martial arts when I was young at what could be charitably be called a "dojo", and I fell off quick. I'm older now and I'm looking to pick up martial arts for exercise, mental health, and personal improvement. I'm not interested in belts, or competitions, or any of the flashy stuff that people like. If I am going to do this, I want to do it right, and not waste my time learning bad habits. I live in South New Jersey and have been struggling to find a legitimate dojo. I was focusing on Goju-Ryu since that is the style that caught my eye the most, but I'm not finding anything here. I found Sei Jun Kan but they are rarely open, don't answer e-mails, or Facebook messages. Plus checking their website against Jesse Enkamp's list has me a bit nervous (not to mention all the incorrect or unnecessary Japanese on their site [I've been studying Japanese for years] https://www.seijunkankaratedo.com/dojo-etiquette/ )
I then looked into Aikido but then found The Martial Way which has Stephen Segal superfans on it's roster, and when I watched the videos on their site it looked like a modern Segal demonstration with people just flopping around everywhere.
I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a legitimate dojo that isn't just a cash grab like all the OKKA dojos in the area. It doesn't seem like Goju-Ryu is on the table, so I'm open to suggestions.
