The Magic of the VDP2 ! Why the Panzer Dragoon Zwei Remake Looks Slower Than the Original Saturn Version
If you watch the two versions side by side, you'll probably notice that the original Saturn version gives you a much stronger sense of speed.
Interestingly, though, the actual dimensions of the game world are very similar between the two versions. So why does the Saturn version feel faster?
The reason is the magic of the Saturn's VDP2.
In Panzer Dragoon II Zwei, the ground is rendered by the VDP2, independently from the rest of the scene. This allows the game to scroll the ground texture at roughly twice the speed of the rest of the environment.
The result is a much stronger sensation of forward movement, even though the actual game speed and dimensions are very similar.
It's kind of like Mario and Sonic on the 16-bit consoles. Both characters can be moving at comparable speeds, but Sonic's use of fast parallax scrolling makes the game feel much faster than Mario.
That's one of the really clever things about the Saturn's VDP2: it could create the illusion of speed without necessarily having to move the entire 3D scene faster.
