This 1991 Topps Carlton Fisk has always been my favorite card. This set came out right when I was old enough to ride my bike to the store and buy a pack of cards, so I'm pretty partial to the set. But this one card specifically has aleays stood out. It's just a great piece of photography that really tells a story.
I've been off work for the last 10 days due to tornado related damage, so I've had a ton of free time. I got to wondering what the actual story is that this card is telling. What game is this from? Who is that giving Feilder the sign to hit the dirt? And what was the result of this play?
I was able to narrow it down pretty far just by looking at the card. It's from a White Sox vs. Tigers game. That narrows it to roughly 2300 games.
It's from the 1990 season, as evidenced by Cecil Feilder being on the Tigers playing in Old Comisky. 1990 is the only year that could happen, and it's a 1991 card, so it makes sense. That narrows it to 12.
It's a White Sox home game. The yellow rails and jerseys give that away. Down to six games now, May 18,19,20, and July 2,3,4.
This next bit takes a bit of a logical leap, but I feel confident in it. All 3 players are wearing sleeves. If you look in the blurry crowd, more sleeves. July in Chi is hot as hell, I looked it up, and 1990 was no exception. 90-degree start times for the July games. We had a cool May that year, and Temps were in the 60s for those games. No one is wearing sleeves in 90-degree heat, but Cecil Feilder is especially not wearing sleeves in 90-degree heat. So, I feel good about eliminating the July series. Down to 3 games now.
May 18, 19, and 20. Fisk didn't play on the 20th, down to 2 games. Spoiler alert. There were no OF assists on either game, so it looks like Feilder scores no matter what. Also we were swept this series, so it doesn't look good.
On May 18th, 1990, Cecil Feilder went 3 for 3 and reached base on a walk. However, his only run scored was off his 7th inning HR. He was stranded on 3rd and forced out at 2nd on a DP and forced out at 2nd on a FC in his other plays. There were no evident plays at the plate, so it's just the 19th left.
On May 19th, Cecil Feilder went 2 for 4 and scored 2 runs. One of those runs he scored from 3rd and the runner on 2nd also scored behind him. So it'd seem unlikely that, who I now believe to be Dave Bergman, would be telling him to slide or telling him to chill.
So if I am correct, this is May 19th, 1990. Top of the 2nd, Black Jack McDowell on the bump. Feilder led off with a base hit. The next batter, Larry Sheets, pops out. Matt Nokes gets plaunked next, advancing Cecil to 2nd. Gary Ward then drives a low liner to CF on a 2-2 count. Lance Johnson feilds, and makes the throw. Feilder slides in to home well before the ball, at the beckoning of lefthanded 9-hole hitting 1st baseman Dave Bergman, who is coming from the on deck circle to hit into an inning ending double play. The run puts the Tigers up 1-0. They go on to win the game 6-4 and sweep the series. What a bummer.
Day 3 of showing off my collection here. I hope you're enjoying so far.

The relic might be a napkin. But it's a big napkin with a pinstripe.
Here's two of my favorite cards with two of my favorite players.
Cashed in some buybacks to basically cover the markup. As someone who primarily watches NXT since the ESPN move, I'm pretty happy with the results. Obviously, Oba is a great hit, but I'll take a Tony D too.
