Hyperpop from an outside Unc perspective

From someone who was raised on classic rock, I guess you could say I had a limited sense of what good music could be. I believe I’ve had some kind of awakening after listening to Ninajirachi’s I Love My Computer.

Being able to embrace the hyperfemininity of her lyrics is new to me but the sound was quite accessible coming from listening to noisy electronic music. I could ground the sound from say, aphex twin or even death grips. To me, Nina and MC Ride share a kind of sincerity that only comes out from the exaggeration of their “worst” qualities, stuff we relate to but are too embarrassed to embrace (like that one song she has about posting photos to get someone’s attention). That naive kinda sincerity keeps me coming back and I relate it to kero kero bonito in a similar vein.

Of course the music itself is fantastic and catchy, and how each song seamlessly flows into the next is something I wish more artists would do!

I suppose hyperpop adjacent is Slayyyter whose latest album I just discovered and am picking apart. Beat Up Chanel$ is gas and I think I get her schtick, like again, exaggerating our generation’s turn to hedonism just because we want to FEEL something or part of something. It can’t be ironic because we do feel lost and we’re grasping at things to fill voids and find purpose. I’m loving her sound, I just wish after hearing Nina’s work the songs flowed! There’s so much remix potential for the whole album (so I’m wondering as a side note if anyone can share remixes you may have discovered)

I’ve asked a coworker to rec me some more artists similar to Nina, but I’m honestly not huge on Charlie, so a lot of what she rec’d didn’t have the same umph that attracted me to Nina or Slayyyter. (She’s ofc a charlie fan, and she turned me on to Marina and the Diamonds, (not hyperpop? But i like them. Forgive my ignorance of genre) so most artists from her shortlist didn’t stand out to me (underscores? More like underWHELMING! (forgive me it was a joke (should I give them another listen?))) bc I found it a lil too derivative of charlie (forgive me))

[ok welcome back]

There’s really no point to this post other than me wanting to get out some thoughts after my brief encounter with this type of music and I hope to explore deeper, so thank you if you made it this far. And I appreciate you bearing my lack of understanding of everything regarding this genre subreddit.

tl;dr damn that ninajirachi LP is espensive

Edit: thank you all for your input! Now I have many recs and no time to check them out!! (But I’ll try) Further discussion about attitudes, lyrics and subject material within the hyperpop zeitgeist is welcome.
