Snow Strippers are insane

Just spent the last few hours listening to their entire discography and it’s truly sublime. It has an intoxicating flavor of amazing videogame-like electronic music combined with this esoteric flow of modern pop. Their music moves me like not many others. My ears are hooked on em like a drug.

I believe they’ve nailed this niche and it’s invoked something deep inside me to want to talk about it with the rest of the world. Like nothing I’ve heard before. Pure ordered chaos in music form.

Do you hear it? Do you agree? Lmk

Hyperpop from an outside Unc perspective

From someone who was raised on classic rock, I guess you could say I had a limited sense of what good music could be. I believe I’ve had some kind of awakening after listening to Ninajirachi’s I Love My Computer.

Being able to embrace the hyperfemininity of her lyrics is new to me but the sound was quite accessible coming from listening to noisy electronic music. I could ground the sound from say, aphex twin or even death grips. To me, Nina and MC Ride share a kind of sincerity that only comes out from the exaggeration of their “worst” qualities, stuff we relate to but are too embarrassed to embrace (like that one song she has about posting photos to get someone’s attention). That naive kinda sincerity keeps me coming back and I relate it to kero kero bonito in a similar vein.

Of course the music itself is fantastic and catchy, and how each song seamlessly flows into the next is something I wish more artists would do!

I suppose hyperpop adjacent is Slayyyter whose latest album I just discovered and am picking apart. Beat Up Chanel$ is gas and I think I get her schtick, like again, exaggerating our generation’s turn to hedonism just because we want to FEEL something or part of something. It can’t be ironic because we do feel lost and we’re grasping at things to fill voids and find purpose. I’m loving her sound, I just wish after hearing Nina’s work the songs flowed! There’s so much remix potential for the whole album (so I’m wondering as a side note if anyone can share remixes you may have discovered)

[Skip this next paragraph]

I’ve asked a coworker to rec me some more artists similar to Nina, but I’m honestly not huge on Charlie, so a lot of what she rec’d didn’t have the same umph that attracted me to Nina or Slayyyter. (She’s ofc a charlie fan, and she turned me on to Marina and the Diamonds, (not hyperpop? But i like them. Forgive my ignorance of genre) so most artists from her shortlist didn’t stand out to me (underscores? More like underWHELMING! (forgive me it was a joke (should I give them another listen?))) bc I found it a lil too derivative of charlie (forgive me))

[ok welcome back]

There’s really no point to this post other than me wanting to get out some thoughts after my brief encounter with this type of music and I hope to explore deeper, so thank you if you made it this far. And I appreciate you bearing my lack of understanding of everything regarding this genre subreddit.

tl;dr damn that ninajirachi LP is espensive

Edit: thank you all for your input! Now I have many recs and no time to check them out!! (But I’ll try) Further discussion about attitudes, lyrics and subject material within the hyperpop zeitgeist is welcome.

Genuinely why do so many trans women make hyperpop?

Underscores, Laura Les, SOPHIE, Ginger Scott, Ayesha Erotica, Kim Petras, Osquinn, both Femtanyls... if you include nonbinary people, there's also Jane Remover, one of the frost children, and both of the Food House members. Probably many others that I don't know. Why?

Is it just because Sophie, Ayesha Erotica, and Laura Les were trailblazers? I feel like even then, three of the most influential hyperpop musicians being transfem is already pretty crazy. Why did all three of THEM succeed in this genre/choose it then?

And there aren't really a lot of transmasculine people who make hyperpop, which makes it even weirder. I can think of maybe two afab nonbinary people who make hyperpop, and zero trans men.

Is there a reason that this happened, or is it just a coincidence that so many of the original bubblegum bass musicians were trans, and it's just the downstream effects of that?

Thoughts on so-called “sleazepop” and labeling the post-hyperpop scene?

The discourse around what hyperpop is has defined the genre arguably as much as its production motifs. The way I see it, the bubblegum base of PC Music was the genesis. 100 gecs defined what I would call classic hyperpop with 1000 gecs and the Spotify genre was allegedly intended to curate similar sounds to that. But in that process, other artists who aren’t like 100 gecs got lumped in as hyperpop and I would argue this is when we started seeing a post-hyperpop scene really be defined.

The most prominent example of a post hyperpop genre is digicore. I call it post hyperpop because it was formed in response to hyperpop. Between about 2022 and 2024, many post hyperpop artists explored more rock sounds, and I would classify census designated, wallsocket, and 10000 gecs as post-hyperpop rock. They were all released in this era but it’s not one genre, so I tend to shy away from calling it all “hyperrock”. Zoomergaze is an example of one of these genres.

Then brat happened, introducing the mainstream to post-hyperpop club music. And now we have U which I would say is post-hyperpop pop. I think there are distinct genres of post hyperpop, including 2hollis’s post-digicore rage, frost children’s post-hyperpop punk, and Ninajirachi’s post-hyperpop EDM.

Sleazepop reminds me of scenecore, a label used for 6arelyhuman’s microgenre, because it mostly comes from aesthetics rather than musical lineage. 6arelyhuman makes krushclub, which is post digicore. But because they dress like a scene diva, people are calling it that. I think that’s exactly what is happening with sleazepop. It’s more about the aesthetics. But I think we should be calling this movement post hyperpop if anything, it feels most accurate to what’s actually happened within the scene.

Historically, I compare post hyperpop to post punk and post hardcore. It’s a movement, not a genre. In my eyes, there are three things that really confuse the discourse: the controversy surrounding the Spotify genre, mainstream labeling of post-hyperpop genres as “hyperpop” especially post Brat, and the lack of hindsight at this early date. I think it’s okay if the mainstream calls it hyperpop. Most people don’t have a nuanced understanding of genre like that. It’s similar to how people call MCR “emo”. Within the music community, we can be more specific, but the mainstream hears their commonalities and I accept that.

I’ve attached a diagram showing where I believe the lineage kind of flows. Not every album placement is probably exactly correct, and not every sub/microgenre is represented, but it illustrates my understanding of where the genre is headed.

TLDR; I believe what’s being referred to as sleazepop is not a musical genre. The indie sleaze revival aesthetic is where I think the term comes from, and post-hyperpop seems to be the more accurate term.

Agree? Disagree?

who here uses discord?

I made this super polished server because imo all the servers suck and there’s no sense of community anywhere but now I’m alone in it so what’s the point? I’m genuinely wondering who here uses discord? What do you appreciate about a server? Please give me hope

Any girls into hyperpop in London?

Hiya! I’m 21F and I’m looking for girls who are into hyperpop and similar music. I love artists like Charli XCX, Ayesha Erotica and Fake Mink, and I’m hoping to find people who’d be up for exploring different clubs, nights and gigs together.

I’d especially love to connect with other Black girls because it’d be nice to meet people I relate to, but everyone’s welcome to message. Just looking for people with the same vibe and music taste. 💖

Songs like Homeswitcher by Jane Remover and Kmoe?

I've listened to both the new Kmoe album, and Jane's entire discography, and while I've found a bunch of songs I like (including several that I'd say I like better than Homeswitcher lol), there haven't been any that give me the same rush that Homeswitcher does. Especially the first half.

manchester, uk – want to make a hyperpop song but I can’t really sing or produce, is anyone down to help?

hey, i’m based in manchester and i’m looking to put together a hyperpop / electronic pop track.

i can’t really sing or produce, so i’m mainly looking for someone who can help bring the idea to life (production, writing, sound design etc). i’m also happy to pay for your time/skills, this isn’t meant to be a “for exposure” thing.

sonically i’m thinking something inspired by artists like kim petras newest album and ninajirachi, catchy but experimental, glossy but still a bit chaotic/electronic.

i don’t want my vocals to be all over the track.

open to beginners or people who just want to collaborate on something fun, as long as you’re serious about actually finishing a track.

if you’re in/around manchester and interested, drop me a message 🤍

Albums Like Frailty By Jane Remover

hi everyone! I've been getting back into hyperpop lately and been feeling really nostalgic about it. the first ever hyperpop album I listened to was Frailty by Jane Remover about a year ago and now I'm back and I can't stop listening to this absolute masterpiece. I'm not that deep into the genre, I know a few artists but pretty much surface level. if you have any albums like Frailty please let me know! any recommendations will be appreciated!
