The McFadden Act of 1927

Good Morning.

Once again we dive into another exercise in voting on critical legislation from the 20th century. This time taking a long look at the *McFadden Act of 1927*. Specifically one important clause, the recharter of the Federal Reserves in perpetuity. There are other sections to this legislation, but this one sticks out to libertarian minded folk as a disappointment from their folk hero, Calvin Coolidge.

Some of the other sections in the bill include:

Competitive Equality: Permitting federally chartered National banks to operate in cities, where state run banks already had that right.

Interstate Ban: Explicitly prohibited national and state banks from setting up branches across state lines

Expanded power: Allowed National banks to better manage real estate loans and personal lending limits.

Now, full disclosure I'm not great at macro economics so some of the things in this bill confuse me.

For this exercise, pretend you are President Coolidge. Are you going to sign the bill into law, or veto the bill?

The 2026 SoCon Season Shitpost

Happy August to all you deprived football fans, especially those who cheer for SoCon teams. Last year Mercer, unsurprisingly, won the conference after some questionable losses early in the season. Let's take a look at the teams and go over the upcoming season.

  1. The Citadel: 4-8, 3-5(Conference Play)

Upon the season opener, The Citadel seemed poised for disappointment. Losing week 1 to NDSU, 38-0 did not bode well for a team looking to improve upon 2024. Three weeks later, Mercer would curb stomp Citadel to the EXACT SAME SCORE. Talk about embarrassing. Their most impressive win would be week 2 over Samford, putting up 40 points, a mark they would not eclipse again. Their second best point total would come against Western Carolina in a loss, 45-38 in which Catamount fans were shitting bricks. The other time they hit 38 point was against D2 Valdosta St. While they may be poor at football, let's hope that the men and women who attend Citadel are better at defending the Nation.

  1. Chattanooga: 5-7, (4-4, Conference Play).

Heading to Chattanooga, the season started with some abysmal defensive play, allowing 45 points to both Memphis and Tennessee Tech. They scored 27 points over these two games. The Offense would roar to life with a 63-0 win over Stetson but two more losses would deflate Chattanooga against FCS rivals and conference does. A strong three game win streak brought hope before Western, Mercer and Wofford delivered three brutal loses to give them a losing season. Hopefully the Mocs can find some balance and start the season on a stronger note.

  1. East Tennessee State: 7-5, (5-3, Conference Play)

ETSU holds the first winning season we find going a respectable 7-5 including 5 conference wins. Winning in Week 1 over Murray State is impressive but week 2 was GOD AWFUL. You lost to Tennessee and have up 72 points in the process. Apparently Tennessee took no Prisoners and have no quarter for anyone. The middle of the season was rough for the Bucs losing 3 out of 4, before winning the final four games over SoCon foes. Chattanooga absolutely bodied the Catamounts 52-35, and no I'm still not over that game. If the Bucs can avoid a slide in the middle of the season, they are absolutely going to be a contender.

  1. Furman 6-6, (4-4).

Furman actually started the season really strong with the only loss coming in OT against a strong Presbyterian team. Looking at a 4-1 record, the Paladins rode into Cullowhee and didn't pray hard enough to the diety of their choice, losing 52-7. This loss started a spiral in which 4 out of the next 6 games ended in defeat. The worst part was even in the wins they never hit above 40 points. Furman could field a stronger defense and they could absolutely hit 7 wins.

  1. Mercer: 9-3, (8-0 conference play).

Congratulations to Mercer for going perfect in SoCon play. Unfortunately the season held some questionable losses, namely to Presbyterian in week 2, 15-10. The next few games with the exception ETSU weren't even close. The toughest battle came against rival Western Carolina who Mercer has routinely smacked for the past 12 years(more on this game later). Mercer made the playoffs but had an abysmal showing losing 47-0 to South Dakota. You guys couldn't even score a field goal, be better Bears!

  1. Samford: 1-11, (1-7).

So I don't feel I can adequately describe the past season without coming off as overly harsh and I'm sure the Samford fans here(if we have any) have said it all. Going 1-11 is bad enough but when you beat VMI by 2 points to secure your only win, y'all need a Come to Jesus Meeting and fast. Here's hoping next season is a little better.

  1. VMI: 1-11,(0-8 Conference Play)

I hope all the Keydets enjoyed week 2 over Ferrum with a thrashing 42-7 win. The rest of the season did not go any better. Apparently Defense isn't taught at VMI which is a shame since one of the finest Southern military leaders in Stonewall Jackson was a teacher here. That class must be optional. Let's hope next season that class is mandatory.

  1. Wofford 6-6(5-3, Conference Play)

A surprisingly strong season given the conference play record. Two close loses to Mercer and WCU, while tough should bring pride given the offensive firepower of these two teams. I strongly suspect that Wofford will make changes and be a dark horse to contend with next year

  1. Western Carolina: 7-5(6-2, Conference Play)

What a way to start the season, Catamounts. You hold a 35-14 lead at halftime. I'm at the game having a good time and then imagine my horror as Western's defense prolapsed and gave Gardner Webb won 52-45. Losing to Wake Forest was a given and then losing to Elon because they couldn't stop a simple QB draw play. Absolutely ridiculous. Western finally got in the win column with a 15 point win over Samford that began a 6 game win streak and this led to the showdown of the decade in Cullowhee.

Homecoming 2025: Mercer against Western Carolina. The Bride vs the eternal Bridesmaid. The Bears against the Catamounts. The defense held just enough and the offense pulled enough tricks to be in a position to win the game with a chip shot field goal......only for the kick to be wide right. And then the fans rushed the field thinking Western had won. Imagine being on the field celebrating a win that in reality was a crushing loss.

  1. Tennessee Tech: Welcome to SoCon ball.

Voting on the Insurrection Act of 1807

Good Morning everyone,

I'm back again asking you all how you would vote in either cabinet appointments or legislation. This time let's look at legislation, specifically The Insurrection Act of 1807.

That in all cases of insurrection, or obstruction to the laws, either of the United States, or of any individual state or territory, where it is lawful for the President of the United States to call forth the militia for the purpose of suppressing such insurrection, or of causing the laws to be duly executed, it shall be lawful for him to employ, for the same purposes, such part of the land or naval force of the United States, as shall be judged necessary, having first observed all the pre-requisites of the law in that respect.

That is the original text and later approved by Congress and signed into law by President Jefferson. Another source I found which I'll link states that this act was modified to be used during the Civil War, the Pullman Strike, among other notable insurrections( among others that can be discussed. Please be mindful of Rule 3). I didn't intend to create a bait post, I am merely asking if you would vote for or against this piece of legislation.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insurrection\_Act\_of\_1807

https://www.zinnedproject.org/news/tdih/insurrection-act-of-1807/

So my fellow Redditors, how are you casting a vote? You can either be a Senator or US Representative for this.

Happy voting!

Vote to Confirm or Deny Hamilton in Washington's Cabinet.

Good Morning r/Presidents,

I wanted to test out a new little series where I'm going to be asking you all to act as either Senators or Congressmen/women, and vote on certain cabinet officers or legislation. Today I wanted to go back to Washington's Cabinet and look at his second choice for the US Treasury, Alexander Hamilton.

I'm going to link his Bio from Wikipedia so if anyone wants to read more in-depth, I would encourage that.

My question is this: Without hindsight, are you as sitting Senators voting to confirm or deny Hamilton to serve as the Secretary of Treasury in Washington's administration? And if you could provide a reason why you voted the way you did. And I'll also play along and give my answer in the comments

I hope you all enjoy the series and take something away from it. We can have fun and learn something at the same time plus it breaks up the monotony of looking at Bush 41 posts.

Whimsical Wonderment Wednesday, Part IV

One of the users, Symbiont3000, gave me the idea for this post. Recently I've been infatuated with the Carpenter's song: "*Top of the World*" which came out in 1973. It is about the euphoria of finding love and seeing the world in a different way. That fits perfectly with Richard Nixon who absolutely saw the world in a different way when he met Thelma Ryan.

Such a feelin's comin' over me,

There is wonder in most every thing I see,

Not a cloud in the sky, got the sun in my eyes

And I won't be surprised if it's a dream.

Everything I want the world to be,

Is now comin' true especially for me.

And the reason is clear, it's because you are here

You're the nearest thing to heaven that I've seen.

I'm on the top of the world lookin' down on creation

And the only explanation I can find

Is the love that I've found, ever since you've been around

Your love's put me at the top of the world

Something in the wind has learned my name

And it's tellin' me that things are not the same

In the leaves on the trees, and the touch of the breeze

There's a pleasing sense of happiness for me

There is only one wish on my mind

When this day is through I hope that I will find

That tomorrow will be, just the same for you and me

All I need will be mine if you are here

I'm on the top of the world lookin' down on creation

And the only explanation I can find

Is the love that I've found, ever since you've been around

Your love's put me at the top of the world

I'm on the top of the world lookin' down on creation

And the only explanation I can find

Is the love that I've found, ever since you've been around

Your love's put me at the top of the world

And I'm sure we can all relate.to finding either our first love or our current ones and the same feeling of euphoria.

Thanks again /u/Symbiont3000

What do you think about Ford's unreleased campaign song and commercial?

I really like the upbeat and catchy song, so much so that I've hummed a few bars of it while working. It's certainly more upbeat than Jimmy Carter's "Why not the Best". And that isn't to demean Carter's song, it's slower and folksy which I typically don't mind but for some reason it just doesn't hit.

1935 v 2013 Dollar

Hey everyone, bit of a different post from me. The image you see is the comparison between a dollar from 1935( First term FDR) and 2013(Second Term Obama). The biggest difference is the bottom of the 1935 dollar: "In Silver payable to the bearer on demand". Compared to our modern dollar where these words are omitted. I came into possession of the older dollar by sheer coincidence. My late grandfather was born in 1936 and this one appears to be signed by his Air Force buddies while he was stationed in West Berlin in the 1950s or 1960s.

To add a question to this post, would anyone know why the silver dollar and payable to bearer on Demand are omitted from future dollars?

Presidential Pardons: Calvin Coolidge

As President, Coolidge issued pardons for 1,545 individuals with two of the notable cases belonging too:

  1. Lothar Witzke: A German spy/saboteur convicted in 1918. He was pardoned and deported in 1923

  2. Marcus Garvey: Founder of the UNIA( Universal Negro Improvement Alliance). Garvey was convicted of mail fraud in 1923, and his sentence was commuted in 1927. Garvey was then also deported.

Whimsical Wonderment Wednesday, Part Three: July 4th Special!!

Good Morning, it's currently July 1st so this post is a little early for the upcoming holiday but I wanted to go ahead and get this out today. As you all know, this Saturday is July 4th, marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the American state, our semiquincentennial. I was listening on the radio on the way back from work and happened to catch, *America, the Beautiful* and wanted to make this post related to that.

O beautiful for spacious skies,

For amber waves of grain,

For purple mountain majesties

Above the fruited plain!

America! America!

God shed His grace on thee

And crown thy good with brotherhood

From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet,

Whose stern, impassioned stress

A thoroughfare for freedom beat

Across the wilderness!

America! America!

God mend thine every flaw,

Confirm thy soul in self-control,

Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved

In liberating strife,

Who more than self their country loved

And mercy more than life!

America! America!

May God thy gold refine,

Till all success be nobleness,

And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream

That sees beyond the years

Thine alabaster cities gleam

Undimmed by human tears!

America! America!

God shed His grace on thee

And crown thy good with brotherhood

From sea to shining sea!

There is a lot for us in this great country to be thankful for, each and every day, from the friends we share here on this platform, to our mentors, parents and loved ones. The various freedoms we possess and sometimes take for granted. This wonderful nation has given many of us here countless opportunities to succeed in life and offers those coming here in search of a better life, the same limitless opportunities.

My own family mirrors this and speaks to the vision laid out on the Statue of Liberty. My paternal side came from Eastern Europe and settled in Geistown Pennsylvania(close to Johnstown) just before 1900 while my mother has traced her lineage back to the American patriots who fought for independence with George Washington. Here we are today on the cusp of a once in a lifetime event celebrating all that America can be with Americans of all creeds.

My question to you reading this: what is something you love about this country?

You are the campaign manager for any failed candidate in history. You have three months to turn the campaign around and try and win the election. Who are you picking and what is the first thing you want them to focus on?

I'm going to pick Dewey in 1944 and I'd want Dewey to hammer FDR over his health. I'd have Dewey commit to finish the war(no question), commit to continue the New Deal social programs that helped the nation, commit to building a peaceful world after the war ends. Americans get the same programs they have enjoyed with a younger, more energetic man committed to cleaning up crime in New York at the helm.

Do you think President Franklin Roosevelt put Rick Blaine in Casablanca to spy on the Germans?

For those who have not seen this movie, first of all shame on you, second you need to stop what you're doing and go and watch this iconic masterpiece, and then tell me what you think.

Rick Blaine is an American Expat living in French Morocco in the city of Casablanca where he runs the successful Rick's Cafe American. He reunites with the love of his life, Ilsa Lund as she arrives with her famed husband Victor Laszlo hoping to escape the Nazis by reaching America. Needing Letters of Transit to exit the city and in the hands of Rick, Victor and Ilsa's fate rest in the hands of a jilted ex lover who has other motives.

My question is this: do you think FDR put Rick there as a spy to keep an eye on German activity in Africa? The date in which the audience meets Rick is Dec. 2, 1941 as we can see on a check that he signs to advance a customer credit.

Birthplace of the Presidents

Note: This is the map showing each state where our Presidents were born at, not the state in which they are primarily associated. For some like LBJ, he was born in Texas and was associated with Texas. Others like Coolidge were born in another state(Vermont) but became associated with another state(Massachusetts).

Also Rule 3 Compliant map so my thanks to GVSU for that.

Which Presidential proposal that was mocked would you have honestly supported?

For me, it would have been the Whip Inflation Now(WIN) campaign. Voluntary actions like conserving energy, and planting vegetable gardens would have been something I would have absolutely done to help my country.

Whimsical Wonderment Wednesday II, The Beer Permit Act

Since 1919, the manufacture and distribution of alcohol had been illegal in the United States. Subsequent Presidents even took drastic measures to prevent bootleggers from distributing their homemade beer; I'm looking at you Calvin Coolidge. Of course the Volstead act was a massive failure and led to the rise of organized crime within cities like Chicago and gangs under the control of Al Capone. When the Depression hit, FDR signed into law the Cullen-Harrison act which permitted alcoholic beverages to be manufactured with a 3.2% or less alcoholic content(Beer Permit Act). Since April 7th, 1933 the US and beer manufacturers today celebrate that as National Beer Day.

Now you may be asking how is this related to whimsical Wonderment. I'm happy you asked that. In 1939, six years after Roosevelt signed the Cullen Harrison Act, a female singing trio of sisters from Minnesota, the Andrews Sisters, recorded their enduring hit, *The Beer Barrel Polka*.

The lyrics are as follows:

There's a garden, what a garden

Only happy faces bloom there

And there's never any room there

For a worry, for a gloom there

Oh, there's music and there's dancing

And a lot of sweet romancing

When they play the polka

They all get in the swing

Every time they hear that "oom-pa-pa"

Everybody feels so tra-la-la

They want to throw their cares away

They all go la-de-ya-de-ay

Then they hear a rumble on the floor

It's the big surprise they're waiting for

And all the couples form a ring

For miles around you hear them sing

Chorus:

Roll out the barrel

We'll have a barrel of fun

Roll out the barrel

We've got the blues on the run

Zing-boom-ta-rarrow

Ring out a song of good cheer

Now's the time to roll the barrel

For the gang's all here

Then they hear a rumble on the floor

It's the big surprise they're waiting for

And all the couples they form a ring

For miles around you hear them sing

Roll it out, roll it out, roll out the barrel

Sing a song of good cheer 'cause the whole gang is here

Roll it out, roll it out, let's do the Beer Barrel Polka

As I mentioned before the Sisters were the second biggest attraction at Decca Records just behind Bing Crosby. At last count in the 1970s, the sisters had sold some 70 MILLION Records. The lyrics paint a scene where friends and family gather to drink and share a jolly time while enjoying alcoholic drinks. Considering the Great Depression has all but ended in 1939, the song painted a scene of optimism for such a happy place where people could gather and drink.

I do have a personal connection to this: in college is when I discovered this music genre of music and one night with my sister and her then boyfriend we all drank. I had eight shots of Crown Royale Apple and I was definitely in a happy place..

Thank you President Roosevelt and the Andrews Sisters for making one of my favorite nights to look back on a hazy reality.
