No, YouTube is not running natively on the calculator 😂
This is Nspire Link, a project I’ve been working on that turns a TI-Nspire CX II into a tiny, fully functional terminal for a Mac.
The Mac’s screen is streamed to the Nspire in 4-level grayscale, while the Nspire’s keyboard and touchpad work as actual input devices for the Mac. Everything goes over USB, and the latency is surprisingly low.
So technically, anything my Mac can do, my calculator can now display and control.
Still a work in progress. I’ll probably open-source it when it’s a bit more polished.

You never know what weird shit a bored 15-year-old will come up with.

Love this Apple Pen.

My friend recently traveled to the Apple Park in the US and gifted me the 35$ Apple Pen and I’m so in love with it! It’s gorgeous. The design, the material and the color is just perfect! As a high school student, I have to confess that I almost never used oil based ink ballpoint pen before and this first try is really great: the writing is really smooth comparing to the water-based ink pen so it’s lot more easier to write continuously for two class periods without getting uncomfortable. It’s just becoming my daily driver.

(I literally just can’t find many other posts on this pen so I decided to post it myself 🥹)

A Real Letter from Caine

My friend Gemma and I both love Caine🥹
Instead of just sending a digital message, I decided to make a real physical letter.
There is also a little hidden note on the back :)
Now I'm going to actually mail it.

Kensington Slimblade Pro with Apple Taptic Engine

I wanted real haptic feedback in my Kensington SlimBlade.

Inspiration: In many iPod Classic mods, people remove the original click speaker and replace it with an Apple Taptic Engine. The click signal that originally drove the speaker is instead used to trigger the Taptic Engine, producing a much more modern tactile click.

I wondered if the same idea could be applied to a Kensington SlimBlade trackball.
The SlimBlade already contains a piezo buzzer for click sounds. After tracing the click signal, I removed the buzzer and connected an Apple Taptic Engine in its place.

The iPhone 7 Plus engine actually worked, but the SlimBlade didn’t have enough space to mount it in the correct orientation.↩️

Switching to the smaller iPhone 13 engine allowed a vertical installation, which dramatically improved the perceived haptic feedback.

SlimBlade Pro.
Now with Taptic Engine.

Installed macOS 27 Beta 1 on my main M3 Air. Then Shimeji spawned hundreds of clones and broke my Mac.

I think I may have discovered one of the weirdest beta bugs I've ever seen.

MacBook Air M3 (16GB), macOS 27 Developer Beta 1.

A few hours after installing the beta, I tried running a Java-based Shimeji desktop pet. I closed the lid and left the Mac charging. When I came back and woke it up, there were literally hundreds of Shimejis all over the screen. The Mac was extremely hot and nearly unusable.

I force quit everything and removed Shimeji, but since then the system has been randomly lagging:

Typing delay
Copy/paste delay
Window switching lag
General UI stutters

Activity Monitor shows:

ecosystemd: ~80% CPU

ecosystemanalyticsd: ~60% CPU

trustd: ~40% CPU

I checked the logs and found ecosystemd continuously spamming:

"RosettaCoordinator: analyze: processPath..."

multiple times per second.

Using fs_usage, I found it repeatedly reading Rosetta libraries and system binaries such as:

/System/Volumes/Preboot/Cryptexes/Rosetta/usr/lib/system/libsystem_kernel.dylib

and

/bin/cp

Killing ecosystemd and ecosystemanalyticsd works temporarily, but launchd immediately restarts them and they go right back to high CPU usage.

Has anyone else seen ecosystemd/ecosystemanalyticsd go into an infinite loop on macOS 27 Beta 1?

At this point I can't tell whether Shimeji broke the analytics database, or whether I just managed to trigger a beta bug in the funniest way possible.
