Puerto Rico creators: Here’s how AI and copyright actually work right now

AI tools can write, draw, and make music in seconds. But who owns it? If you create in Puerto Rico, you need to know this.

\\\*\\\*1. AI Output is Not Automatic Copyright\\\*\\\*
In the US, you cannot copyright something made only by AI. If you type a prompt and AI gives you an image, you do not own it like a photo you took. You need human changes to claim rights.

\\\*\\\*2. Training Data is the Real Fight\\\*\\\*
Many artists say AI was trained on their work without permission. Lawsuits are happening now. Until courts decide, use AI tools that say their data is licensed.

\\\*\\\*3. You Are Still Responsible\\\*\\\*
If AI gives you a logo that looks like Disney, you can still get a DMCA notice. "The AI did it" is not a legal defense. Always check before you post or sell.

\\\*\\\*Bottom line for PR creators:\\\*\\\*
Use AI to brainstorm. Edit heavily. Add your own art, voice, or writing. Document your process.

Fake DMCA 512(g) Extortion Email - Me

Location: Ponce, Puerto Rico

I received a fraudulent DMCA 512(g) notice via email demanding $2000 payment to resolve a "circumvention" issue.
There is no actual copyrighted material, no takedown, and no legitimate claimant.

Actions taken:

  1. Filed FBI IC3 complaint - Case #9171dab
  2. Reported to Meta via their fraud forms 3 weeks ago - No response

My question:
Do I have grounds to pursue a claim against Meta for failing to address reported fraud using their DMCA system?
Has anyone successfully sued Meta for negligence related to fake DMCA abuse?

I am not seeking legal advice from a lawyer here, just experiences from others actively pursuing action.

Meta, DMCA 512(g) is being used to extort creators

@Meta @zuck

Heads up. I received a fraudulent DMCA 512(g) notice with "Circumvention" threats demanding payment to "resolve it".

There is an FBI IC3 case open: #9171dab

My Reddit post about this hit 2.1k views in 48h and more creators are getting the same exact message.

They're using the DMCA system to extort people. Please review and stop this before more accounts get hit.

PSA: AI companies are sending fake "Circumvention" DMCAs to Puerto Rico creators to extort $500-$2000

I’m from Puerto Rico and we’re getting hit with a new scam.

Companies using AI tools are filing fake DMCA 512 notices claiming "circumvention". Then they DM creators demanding $500-$2000 to "avoid FBI action".

Red flags:

  1. No real copyright holder named
  2. Threats instead of takedown notices
  3. Payment via CashApp/Zelle, not legal channels

I filed IC3 report #2025-XXXXXX.

If you’re a US creator, check every DMCA. Most of these are AI-generated spam.

Has anyone else seen this?

DMCA 512(g) Extortion with "Circumvention" Threats, FBI IC3 #9171dab [US] United States

On May 1, 2025, I received multiple DMCA takedown notices from an entity

using the name "TeamDominator".

  1. 512(g) Violation: The notices failed to include required elements for a

    valid counter-notification under 17 U.S.C. § 512(g).

  2. Extortion Language: Subsequent correspondence included the term

"Circumvention" as a threat to force content removal outside of the

    DMCA process.

  3. FBI Filing: IC3 Report #9171dab was filed on May 1, 2025, for

alleged 512(g) abuse and extortion. Full email headers and copies

    retained.

EFF Case Reference: LW-N6883. Techdirt no response after 6 days.

Posting publicly because the notices are being used to silence content

via threats rather than DMCA process.

Redacted screenshots and headers available to journalists on request.

No personal info or doxxing. Not legal advice.
