I've Been Awake Since March 29th
I haven't slept since March 29th, today is May 20th. It started with me just staying up all night playing games with some of my friends. We started around 11 pm and it wasn't until around 6 am when I realized what time it was. I decided it was time to get off so I told my friends I had to go and then turned off my computer. The sun was rising so I went out on the balcony of my studio apartment to watch it. It was a mixture of beautiful orange and blue colors. I felt so peaceful. After around an hour of sitting outside, I noticed I still felt wide awake. I felt like I could even run a mile. It was a rare occurrence that I was off work and I didn't want to blow the day away sitting at home. I went back inside and pondered how to spend my day away from organizing shelves and picking up people's stuff at my local thrift store. I texted my friend, Kyle and asked if he wanted to hangout. After a few minutes without a response, I deduced that he was probably asleep after staying up all night. It seems pretty obvious now but at that time sleep was the furthest thing from my mind. I chose to go to a small shopping mall that wasn't too far away from my apartment. It was a fun day but I ended up coming back home empty handed. I got back around 7 after picking up some chinese food. I was pretty hungry at that point so I tore into my food and ate most of it while sitting at my small kitchen table. I checked my phone and opened the group chat and asked, “You guys down to play again tonight?” Kyle wrote back “Nah man, I'm too tired. Maybe tomorrow.” James and Jeff never responded so I assumed they were sleeping or busy. “Lame” I responded. I sat down on my couch and mindlessly watched TV for a few hours. While a commercial was playing, I realized I haven't slept in a day. I had work the next morning so I completed my nightly routine and got into bed. I laid there looking at the ceiling for a few minutes then closed my eyes to slowly drift off into sleep. Hours passed as I stared at the ceiling, completely unable to fall asleep. Eventually my phone went off to wake me up for work. I sat up in bed and wondered how hours had passed in what felt like a few minutes. I left my apartment around 8 am and the car ride to work was slow and uneventful. I arrived at the Cornerstone thrift store and put my numbers into the computer to clock in. I glanced up and looked out the window ready to begin my shift. I saw the orange sunbeams gleaming through the window. The sun was setting and I looked back down to the monitor to see “7 hours and 35 minutes worked.” I quickly checked my phone to see the time. 4:05 PM. I stared at the time wondering if it was right or if my phone was broken. I saw my boss, Mr Phil, walking up and I hesitantly said “H-Hey Phil, what time did I get here today?” “Ah hello there Marcus! I believe it was around 8:30 this morning.” “Oh…Well alright then I'm headed out.” “Have a great night Marcus!” He paused, then said “I hope you sleep well.” I slowly turned around and walked out. “What is happening to me?” I muttered to myself then I got in my car and drove home.
The next several weeks followed this exact pattern. The weird thing is I still felt energized. Every day I felt like I had just slept 12 hours. Some days I even felt better than I normally would. Eventually I got kinda used to this and it wasn't so bad. Play games all night with my friends, go to work and get paid for 8 hours of work that passed in an instant then go back to chilling at home. This all came to an end one night when I was hanging out with Kyle.
I was sitting on my couch and Kyle was sitting on the other end, both of us entangled in some horror movie. “Hey Marcus” Kyle breaks my concentration on the movie. “Oh, yeah what is it Kyle?” I reply still staring at the TV. “When was the last time you went to sleep?” He says blankly. I look over at him, feeling confused and a little on edge. “What do you mean? I went to sleep last night, of course. It was around 11 I-” Kyle cuts me off saying “No, Marcus, you need to go to sleep.” My heart skipped a beat. “Uhhh, I did last night dude.” Lying about sleeping was the easiest thing to do. I'm not sure anyone would even believe me anyways. “You need to sleep.” Kyle says in a flat monotone voice. I stand up and look at Kyle. Kyle's face was rotating and spiraling into itself. “Kyle, what's wrong with you!” I scream out of fear. Kyle stands up and starts walking towards me. He reached out his hands and his fingers began snapping. An unknown force bent his hands back and his wrists snapped in half. I watch in horror as my friend crumbles to the floor, every bone in his body breaking in the process. “Go. To. Sleep. Marcus.” He repeats very weakly. Eventually the sounds stop and so does Kyle's life. “What is happening!” I yell out to no response. My mind was at the edge of breaking and I had no idea what to do next. I ran to my bedroom and locked the door. I don't remember what exactly happened next. I know I sat on my bed for hours staring at my bedroom door waiting for something to happen. Eventually I looked at the alarm clock on my nightstand and it read 4:44 AM. My mind spiraled deeper and deeper into fear just as Kyle's face did hours before. Knock. Knock. Knock. Three slow rhythmic knocks tore my mind back into reality. “Marcussss” the voice was long and drawn out but I knew who it was. “K-Kyle! Are you alright??” “Go To Sleep” Kyle responded in a deep whisper. “I can't sleep!” I finally blurted out. “I can't sleep, I can't sleep Kyle. I haven't slept in weeks and I don't know why! I don't know why this is happening to me!” The words came out naturally and I waited for a response. Silence filled the room. After a few minutes, I heard slow retreating footsteps. “Hello? Kyle?” More silence filled the room. Step step step step step. All of a sudden I heard steps getting quicker and quicker until I heard a very loud slam. It was Kyle. He slammed himself into my bedroom door. Slam slam slam. He continued over and over again pushing his body against my door. As he was slamming, I heard him gasping in a very low demonic tone. He sounded like some rabid animal. But it was to the rhythm of his body hitting my door. Hours and hours passed of Kyle repeating this. I had wrapped my pillow around my ears to drown out the noise and gasping. I closed my eyes and sat there waiting. Suddenly the banging stopped. I waited a few seconds and slowly opened my eyes, still staring down at my bed. I glanced over to the door. There was a hole just big enough for Kyle's head to fit through. His skin had turned black as if he had just been burned. His long black hair looked charred and was thinning. The aroma of death hit my nostrils. His eyes met my gaze and I could see his yellow decaying teeth as he smiled grimly. I could see his cheekbones and his skin looked like it was stretching over his face. After what felt like an eternity of staring at each other, the thing turned around and I listened as it walked all the way out of my apartment.
This happened 4 days ago and I haven't heard from Kyle since. I texted Jeff and James and they both said the same thing. I don't know whether that thing was Kyle or if it even was real. I still haven't slept and now I am scared too. Every night since the incident I have been getting more and more tired. I'm terrified of what will happen if I sleep.
