Curious about the Cartridge Designation for Colt Python

Hello all,

I’m looking a purchasing a first firearm and I’ve had the 6” Colt Python on my mind. It wouldn’t be the first gun I’ve fired, but in terms of selecting a firearm to own, I just keep getting brought back to the Python.

I’m currently reading the owners manual on it and its states that it can use both 38 special and .357 Magnum, but lists the cartridge designation as only .357 on the barrel of the gun. Most of what I’ve read online says that beginning with 38 special on revolvers is good to get used to the firing style and revolvers in general.

My question is: has anyone run into issues using 38 special for Colt Pythons? Also, if there’s anything I should know going into using and potentially owing a Python or a revolver in general. Thanks in advance!
