Learning for healthcare
I work as an emergency response nurse in the UK in an area with a large Urdu speaking population. I would like to learn some phrases that would be useful for my job (i.e 'do you have any pain?' 'can you squeeze my hand?' etc, that sort of stuff) and maybe enough to just get by for small conversations. Where am I best to start? I'm lucky that I have a lot of Urdu speaking colleagues to practice with, so that's a big resource I'm aware of. One other question, and apologies if this is an ignorant one but with the large south Asian population in my area many people speak Urdu but also many people speak other languages like Farsi or Punjabi, I gather there's some overlap between some of these languages but is it enough that I could learn one and vaguely get by in another? Is there one language which is more universal (like how a German and french person might be able to muddle together a conversation in English?). Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!
