Is throwing away unsold food normal?

I admire shops that sell unsold items at a discount. I’ve seen a few bakeries and supermarkets do this. I’m aware of TooGoodToGo too, not used it yet.

Surprised to see KVICKLY bake shop at Valby throw away their cakes and breads straight to the bin. The lady staff even poked out a few strawberries out of some before trashing cakes and pastries.

Is this common practice?
