Neck thickness on Guitar retailer websites and builds — fret wire included or not?

Hey folks,

I'm looking at some guitars that aren't available to me locally and I'm trying to imagine how they feel.

When retailers say that a neck thickness is X at fret 1 and Y at fret 15, is that neck thickness + fretboard thickness + fret thickness?

Or just the first two?

For e.g the strandberg 6 string is 21.7mm thick at fret 1, 22.5mm at fret 15. What does that truly mean?

Thanks for your time lads

Headless guitar .... With a head?

I'm very curious, have any of you taken a stranderg-esque shape and just put a headstock on it?

How does it look?

Is it comfy?

Does it become neck heavy?

Grain Direction for Through Neck — Upwards Or Downwards

Hey Guys,

I'm building a neck-through guitar and I'm about to start cutting.

However, a strange thought dawned upon me.

Does the direction of the grain matter? I mean matter beyond the grain being in the same direction as the string tension.

Obviously the grain goes from headstock towards the body, but I find that the grain also acts like the fur of a dog in a way.

As in it acts smoothly in one way, rough in the other.

And so my question(perhaps a dumb one); Is that direction important in any sense? would it make, say the headstock, easier to carve if it faced one direction and not the other?

For context I bought the laminated body plank online and I'm wondering which way to orient it
Thanks in advance!

Assymetric Trapezoid Neck Profile — Help

Hello fellow luthiers, newbie here.

I recently played a strandberg and fell in love with the neck profile. I want to try to recreate something similar at home. I'm working with bare timber from scratch.

My question is how I should go about doing it well and accurately.

Trapezoid shape: Top: 1 Left side: 2 Right side: 3 Bottom side: 4

I have two approaches in mind so far.

  1. Rasp the flat top where the thumb rests(1) to size and then rasp the the sides accordingly to create the correct trapezoidal shape.

OR
2. Calculate the angle of the trapezoid(between 2 & 4, 3 & 4) along the whole neck, and sand to those angles. Then finally sand the flat thumb side(1) to correct thickness.

Is one more reasonable than the other? Am I entirely off in my approach?

All tips and suggestions are welcome!
