Getting fired was the best thing to ever happen to me
self explanatory title. i was stuck at a SoCal location because it was my first job, i had sunk so much time into it, i didnt think id get hired anywhere else, and i desperately needed money. throughout my entire tenure, i had seen talented leads and selfless managers disappear one by one until the worst of the worst took their place. i had also learned very quickly that, at least at my location, everyone there was in one big club— and i wasnt in it.
in fact, i would daresay i was the antagonist of that club to them. i was watched and needled and constantly reported on by every single person in that club, unfairly treated each and every day while i was just trying to get through the day. the longer i worked, the more i hated everything. but i felt like i couldnt leave, because WinCo had done so much for my family and it was basically all i knew, both in my professional life and my personal life.
over the course of 2026, i was making great strides in my personal pursuits. i had never felt better about myself. but going to work was just a massive, anxious struggle. dodging this that and the other, panicking about a massive health scare, and fighting against what felt like a two-tiered justice system. clocking in every day was like gearing up for 5 hours of torture, if that.
even though i needed the money, i would constantly be shorted hours. everyone was. people who've been with the company for 15+ years getting the schedules of the most part time part timers thanks to inept managers. i was lucky if the number of hours i worked in a given week had a 2 at the start of it. couple that with barely legal shifts, getting stuck at nights (the worst time in my store), and working with a skeleton crew day after day for no reason other than autofilled incompetence.
it was getting to a point. i wanted out, but couldnt find a way. i had spikes of motivation to find something else, but i would start getting comfortable and dropped my efforts.
i had a nice little kick in the rear a couple months ago, though
id been coping with unnecessary writeups from the management panopticon since the start of the year. complaints that would be nothing if it came from other people, hurt feefees of people who seemed entirely unfit for the positions they had, and unending pulls up to the office for scoldings where i hadnt even done anything wrong but they had to justify whatever time they had to spend dangling their superiority over me. theyd only told me i could appeal these writeups just recently, so i took the plunge into that process. it was the most flagrant foul id ever received: a customer accused me of conduct id never ever engage in while also threatening me with tons of witnesses. i had to do something; i couldnt get fired for something i didnt do. so i did. in the meantime, i was under so much pressure to behave that i didnt know what to do. i was on the brink of collapse, and enough people decided to say something about it that i was handed a suspension. the appeal fell through after that, and i was eventually fired on my hiring anniversary.
thank god.
it was heartbreaking, sure, but i bounced back faster than i thought i would. got a new job that i love so much more within two weeks or so. they schedule me better, the team is way nicer, and there are actual benefits that i can SEE instead of just imagining that theyre there to eventually collect when ive broken my body enough for the corporation. ive never been happier or felt better in my life ever since entering the workforce
if anybody out there is struggling like i was, quit. dont be afraid. dont wait another second and get out of there. you deserve better and you will get better. there is always so, so much more out there available to you than the droll prison youre stuck in. (might as well be a prison; robbed of personalization and forced to wear a uniform whose polyester bonds are barely keeping together). dont lose hope no matter how sharp the sticks and how hefty the stones are
you will be okay. you are more than what admin says you are. you got this.
