I'm in the process of selling a home and the inspector indicated the natural gas meter needs to be "grounded". I searched the internet a little and I have located the relevant section in the NEC (250.104 (B): attached). The code says specifically to "bond" the pipe system to one of five options.

I called the inspector to get his input, and he said the natural gas piping needed an isolated grounding rod to be driven into the ground adjacent to the meter and for the piping to be grounded to the rod. When I questioned this approach (mentioning the piping may be bonded elsewhere in the system), he got quite salty and became unhelpful.

My question is:

Does his approach follow the code? Bonding options 4 or 5 make me question if he may be right. But, I am wondering if this refers to bonding to the grounding electrode that serves the electrical system of the home, rather than an isolated grounding electrode that only connects to the natural gas system.

I'd love to have some clarity before I call an electrician and potentially spend money (and their time) that isn't necessary. Plus, I don't want to make the home unsafe for the buyer.

One commenter in r/askelectricians noted that adding a grounding electrode to the natural gas system would not protect the system since the natural gas line is essentially a grounded electrode itself. This logic made perfect sense to me, but I thought more input never hurts

We had a loving flame point (Milo) for several years, but sadly we lost him to kidney disease about a year and a half ago. Now we have two new babies in our family: Stevie and Laura Lee (left to right; sisters). They may look nearly identical, but their personalities are practically the opposite. Stevie is very rambunctious, curious, and energetic. Laura Lee is calm, shy, and reserved. We're very happy to have them in our home and look forward to them growing into beautiful long haired princesses.
