Hi everyone, I’d really appreciate some honest advice.

I have 7+ years of experience in the creative field, mostly as a freelance graphic designer, along with some time in an agency and some in-house roles.

In my last full-time job, I joined as a designer, but over time, my role expanded a lot. I ended up:

- managing social media end-to-end

- planning and producing reels/content

- handling collaborations with influencers

- creating all brand creatives

- contributing to the overall brand direction

In hindsight, this was closer to a brand/social media manager role, but my title and pay remained that of a graphic designer.

Now I’m trying to figure out my next step, and I feel a bit stuck. What I’m trying to understand:

How can I position myself to transition into a brand manager or social media manager role more formally?

Are there specific skills I should focus on (strategy, analytics, etc.) to be taken more seriously in these roles?

Are there industries or types of companies where these roles are better defined and respected?

My background:

Bachelor’s in Design (Visual Communication), MSc in Design Innovation Management, and experience across freelance, agency, and in-house

I’m also trying to keep up with AI tools and how they’re changing creative/marketing roles. Would love suggestions on what’s actually worth learning vs just hype.

My bigger concern is that I don’t want to end up in another role where expectations are unclear and I’m underpaid for the scope of work.

Would really value any guidance, especially from people who’ve made a similar transition.

Thanks in advance.
