What's the "best" external hard drive for a 2022 M2 Mac Pro?

So, I recently bought a Seagate HDD hard drive 1TB and thought it'd be great. But, turns out, according to the internet, HDD hard drives don't work as great for Mac computers. I found this out after it consistently glitches out and is basically unusable.

However, I think the main problem, and reason, that it's glitching out, is because I have the Seagate HDD Hard Drive plugged into my UGREEN USB hub port thing, which has multiple USB plugs on it. The reason I have it plugged into this though, is because I don't have enough ports on my Mac to plug all the things into it. (I currently have a double monitor plugged in through the port as well, and then other than the port, I have a place for my charger.)

Anyway, I heard that SSD hard drives have an easier time with USB hub ports because they don't need as much power to work. And so, I was looking at a few SSD hard drives, but they're all pretty expensive (like $300+). The ones that aren't too expensive have worse reviews.

So, I was just wondering, what's an SSD hard drive that would be a good medium for my Mac? Where it wouldn't be too expensive (I'm aiming for like sub-$150-$170), would work through a USB port, wouldn't constantly disconnect due to going through a USB port, and would be somewhat reliable? Anyone found one like that, or do I have to just fork over the cash for a decent hard drive? Thanks!

For more context: The reason I wanted a hard drive in the first place is because my job revolves around my computer, so I have tons of apps downloaded on it that I need for work, but they're taking up so much storage that I only have like 5 GBs left on my Mac, which makes everything on it work muchhhhh slower. So, my idea was to have an external hard drive and just run the apps through there (since I don't usually take my Mac other places).
