Hello!
I have been getting a lot of conflicting information about job availability, and I was hoping someone here might have insight into why that is. I know I’m not the only ENL teaching fellow concerned about this since we have all been talking about it and trying to figure things out together.
Most of what I’ve seen online has told me that ENL is high demand and jobs won’t be difficult to come by. However, I’ve also heard that 60% of the ENL teaching fellows from last year weren’t able to find a position and are substitute teaching.
Before I heard about the difficulties some of the fellows faced last year, I was hoping to find something with a reasonable commute to help me manage my work schedule and classes at the same time, but now I’m wondering if I’m being unrealistic.
So, two questions:
- If there are so many jobs available, why might it be that ENL fellows struggled so much more than all of the other subject areas to find jobs last year?
- Which neighborhoods have the greatest need for ENL teachers?
Edit: I live in lower Manhattan with my partner, in case any one knows what might be a realistic goal in terms of commute?
