The disappearance of a safety pin
Just some context: As my pants are loose, I use a safety pin to tighten it.
This morning, I went to the toilet. I removed the safety pin keeping my pants from being loose and wanted to place it at my usual spot (a relatively flat surface), but saw there were ants crawling around the spot. So I went to put it on top of the metal, rounded, tissue holder instead.
Usually when I put my safety pin on such cylindrical tissue holders, I try to keep watch of it, especially when I pull tissue from said holder, to prevent the pin from dropping. This time, however, I was feeling distracted and thus did not consciously keep an eye on it.
After doing my business, I went to take the safety pin from the top of the tissue holder. To my astonishment, the safety pin seemed to have vanished off the face of the planet. I thought the pin might have camouflaged into the tissue holder as they are both metal, but when I touched the top of it and looked closely around the tissue holder a bit, I could not spot it.
I looked (unfortunately kind of literally) high and low, even opening the toilet cap that I closed to flush the toilet to check if the pin somehow managed to fall inside the toilet, and shaking my (black) shoes a bit in case it fell onto them and hid on them, but all my efforts to find the safety pin ended in vain.
As I have for a long time anticipated potentially losing the safety pin, I had kept an extra one with my keys that I had on me, so I used it. I was glad I prepared for this (still unexpected considering the circumstances of the pin's disappearance) situation as my pants are quite loose and I would be suffering attempting to walk around without the safety pin to tighten it.
Until now, hours later, I still wonder where the safety pin went. I just have to hope I don't somehow lose the extra safety pin as well. After all, lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place, right?...right? 🫠
