Posting on behalf of a friend who has just found out she is nearly 10 weeks pregnant and is extremely anxious.

In normal circumstances she would have kept the pregnancy, but after having her son 8 years ago she became critically unwell following a C-section, developed sepsis (which she believes was caused by complications from the surgery, although the hospital never admitted this), needed emergency surgery and had around 50cm of bowel removed. She was left with significant internal scarring and adhesions involving her bowel and is unsure whether its safe to continue the pregnancy.

She has spoken to her GP, a midwife, has had a private early scan, and had an appointment at her local hospital but she still isn’t getting any real answers about what this history could mean for this pregnancy, which is why I wanted to ask if anyone here has been through anything similar.

Has anyone become pregnant after severe complications like this, particularly with bowel surgery or significant adhesions after a C-section? Did you go on to have a safe pregnancy? Were you treated as high risk or monitored differently? Did anyone have problems as the baby grew because of adhesions, or concerns about bowel obstruction? Equally, if you were given warnings or difficult advice, honesty would be appreciated too.

She knows everyone’s case is different and isn’t looking for medical advice, just hoping to hear from anyone with past experience or advice, as she is feeling very anxious and eager to understand what others have been told or experienced in similar circumstances.
